Numb Bits

Postby Keith » Thu Oct 23, 2008 8:52 pm

I'm still suffering with a bit of whiplash, but fancied turning the legs over. To ensure I avoided any black Corsas (or more to the point, to ensure they avoided me  ), I rode on my recently bought rollers.

After an hour it did highlight a problem. If I ride in my usual tuck position on rollers (or Rob H's turbo during my LBP test) I get numb bits. I don't mean a bit of loss of sensation, I mean a complete loss of feeling!

I've never had any problems on the road, it's just on static bikes. I expect to use the rollers quite a bit this winter, so it's time for a new saddle.

Has anybody got / tried any of the Selle SMP saddles? Something like this?

Sorry to tell you this matey boy, but it has nothing to do with the saddle, it is just because you are on rollers. Unfortunately you will need to learn how to get out of the saddle for small amounts of time while on the rollers, just need to get up now and then, lift you butt up a bit, its not easy I know, but a new saddle is unlikely to make any difference.

After you have got the bum lift (so to speak) sorted, then you can move onto riding on the rollers no hands.

Cheers

More saddle time required me thinks...Most people who I have tested have suffered down there.

I had the problem whenever I rode over 20 miles until I switched to Selle Italia saddles with the cut out and haven't had any problems since.

You could try using a TT saddle, as they're designed for spending a whole heap of time sitting in one position and have more padding on the nose. When I built up my current TT bike I thought it was fine with a Selle Italia SLR saddle until I did the first 50 of the season. That gave me a numb old fella for about two days. I switched to a SLR T1 and been fine ever since.

Probably somink to do with riding seated and pushing down more on the rollers than on the road. TT saddle with padded nose for the TT bike for maximum perching comfort but switching saddles for each turbo session could be a bit of a drag.

Cheapo solution I tried this week.

I folded a towel up and laid it over the saddle, It worked really well but moved during the session. I'm going to try the same thing next week, I'll try to cable-tie it round the post. 8)

Hi Keith, as Marek said , get out of the saddle once in a while, on the road you do this all the time. I had the same problem and tried a variety of saddles including the one in the picture, I still have one (the cheaper more padded one) if you wish to try before you buy, as they're not cheap. The best one for me I found was the Rido saddle and dirt cheap less than £10 from SJS online. I have 2 of them (on my commuting and road bike) and going to buy 2 more (one for track bike and one spare) still less than £40!! But it may not suit you and it's looks aren't great, but it does come in yellow and black ! On the turbo I still get out of the saddle once in a while just to make sure no numb bits! I must admit I have not tried TT specific saddles. I am reluctant to buy more to add to my collection of discarded saddles.

The test doesn't crack them it's the saddle...
