Thanks to Toks for getting me round ok...for the record it was my fastest trip to the cafe yet...not quite 16mph but not far off...
Hey Andrew, good effort on saturday mate. :D The plan was to average 15mph so it sounds like job done. Interestingly Steph had 14mph as an average mmm :?

[quote="Alan M"]A funny ride out today. I opted for the first 18 group but we caught the 19s at TLs well before the turn to Merstham. We laid off them and let them create a gap. But by Reigate Heath the 19s had dropped a few for whom they now waited. This placed the 18s ahead of the 19s and they subsequently caught us and we formed a rather large group! I suggested that they turn left and we go straight on at the gravel turning - this would have placed us behind them again, but they followed on! Adam seemed a tad preoccupied by this and made a decision to burn some off the back - this was partially successful but the group was still somewhat large and by the right turn just before the pub we took stock and divided.

I spoke to Monty after the club run and I'm sure he'll bring it up next week. But the whole reason groups are limited to size is because when they get to big, its dangerous. Before I went to the front to ''burn some off the back'', I drifted to the back of my original group and suggested to the riders tagged on the back that the group was now too large, and that they ought to allow the gap to go. Then low and behold after a brief gap is allowed, a vice captain no less chases it down. Thus bringing the group back together. It took Alan to physically stop the whole group to sort it out, as he mentioned. This should not have to happen.

Did people leave their common sense at home on Saturday?

I wouldn't mind if groups consistently rode sensibly and smoothly, in two lines like normal, but this seems to have gone out the window of late. This wasn't a training group after all.

There has been a pretty noticable drop in the standard of riding at 18-20mph level in the club recently. There is not a shortage of experienced riders, just a shortage of ones who are willing to actually lead a group. Often groups make it all the way to Charlwood and back without needing to be put into line, but sometimes it's needed, and it should only take one person to say so. At the end of the day we all want to enjoy our ride, but no one likes ending up on the floor because of some reckless riding. Might I also point out that the area the clubrun goes through is actually pretty hostile towards cyclists, much more so than other areas in Surrey, Kent, Sussex and Hampshire. So when large groups get out of line, the cars will only get more aggitated. As far as I know there has never been a really serious incident involving the ACC clubrun and a car, but the way things are at the moment, it is only a matter of time.

All I ask is that those of you who have been riding for a while, to take responsibility for a group when it is riding poorly. Or at the very least support the guy who sticks his neck on the line and speaks up for you.

Cheers,

Adam

Oh but apart from that, the ride was good! If a little chilly to start.

The thru'n'off was pretty good once it got going too. Thru'n'off ought to continue in as many groups as possible over the winter as it really helps to bring on peoples standards of riding, including myself.

Mine was a little different.

Went to Cardiff to visit in-laws and of course took the steed, having checked for local rides via bikeradar.com. Cardiff Jif are a local club that does Saturday CRs. Set off in a small bunch of a dozen or so through town and out towards Newport and some little villages. Rotating at the front was interesting as the two lead riders move apart to let the whole group through before they then tag on the back. By some judicious jostling at junctions, roundabouts etc I avoided point position for most of the ride until their version of T&R where the point men pull for 100 yards or so, thus upsetting the smooth Team Time Trial-type effect that we enjoy. No cafe stop, which was a shame. Instead we pulled up at some godawful petrol station to munch our bananas, Snickers etc before heading back along the River Usk, enjoying the pretty countryside and the many pretty sheep dotted about.
Road surfaces were fantastic, unlike the cr@p we have in Surrey, the toll to enter the country obviously being put to good use, and after a brisk 50 or so miles we rolled back into Cardiff, at an average 18mph. Today their CR was heading up to Rhigos and back for 75 miles, one of the lumps we did in the Dragon ride in the summer, in the kind of weather that has me settled down with the Sunday Times and the telly remote. One of the reasons I'll never "win" the Dragon.

Always a good crowd and a good ride.

Strongly recommend checking bikeradar with a quick question under Sportives/Local rides as to any CRs whenever you're in a different town for the weekend.

We saw a few of the Jif and Ajax riders when we did the Dragon ride this year, I seem to remember they were going pretty damn quick. Your right about tagging onto other club runs, it is always interesting to see how others do it and great for getting to know a route in an area you don't know. I do it in Poland every time I go, I am now a regular in the holiday season, have even done a few races with them in the summer months.

Also did it in France this year and that was a good crack. I seem to remember reading something about club runs in Wales but cannot remember where but believe there are a few clubs in the Cardiff area that go out towards the hills.

Cheers

I had great fun in the LBP group on Saturday. Great company, in fact I think it was the banter that kept my HR higher. I haven't had the test yet but I used the ride as a recovery ride from a week of training so kept a low HR. It was interesting to see how everyone's body responds and I hope the guys (and gal) keep it up because its very brave to put your testosterone in a box and go out in a slow group sometimes. But it will pay off. You dont have to be quick in October if you want to race in April!! Well done everyone and thanks to John for accomodating us :D

Yeah that really worked well. The group stopped, a few words were uttered about splitting the group. I said I'd hang back and wait with a few others while Adam went ahead with the rest. Low and behold as soon as Adam moves off 90% of the group follows him leaving just 4 of us behind  You gotta laugh. Still, this left Dan and myself to have a good natter and a laugh on the way to the cafe.

Run back home was good, just a small group heading off back via BH including Dan and Marek, just a nice steady pace. I had started my day with the 19's but my right leg kept cramping up so dropped into the 18's. Luckily it eased off for the rest of the ride. Lets hope next weeks ride is a bit smoother.

Mmmmmm..... seems like slow is the new fast, but then my midweek rides are quite steady and my objectives for competitive racing are likely to be modest, so for me its same old same old methinks.

Yes Anthony, by that point I wasn't even sure if it was worth splitting the group but it felt like a principle worth pursuing if only to underline that it is all more manageable and safer in optimum sized groups. On reflection I think we needed a few minutes more gap between the groups setting off. The points about keeping cohesive groups and disciplined lines are probably well made but it is a perennial problem as people adjust to the norms expected - so helpful coercion and reinforcement sometimes has the right result 8)

It feels like I donate mine most saturdays!

[quote="Sylv"]Had good fun at Herne Hill, rode there after bodging a front brake on my fixed this morning (riding it to the pub last night without brakes was scary enough), which involved carrying a front wheel and stem/handlebar/brake combo on my back.

I didn't have my HRM, but I think Kieran hit 185 :D, No speedo either, but left at 9.50 and back at 2.30 - totally knackered.

It was super windy, and now that HH is closed for the winter, looking forward to any upcoming trips to Calshot or Newport.

Yep, great fun, myself and Sylv went in the 'fast' races (and slow races, where bad boy Sylv contested the finish with another VCL guy who had been in the fast race, the VCL guy got his ear eaten off by the coaches for contesting the B race finish, Sylv was spared a telling off though) which mainly consisted of VCL boys and a few others, invariably the others got dropped and myself and Sylv would be the only non VCL in the final lap, where Sylv put up a good show in the final sprint a few times.

My heart rate usually stayed about 160bpm but in the final sprints or bridging a gap went up over 180 a few times. Tired legs on the way home, due in part to myself and Sylv messing on the track after the training sessions finished. One funny slow motion crash between 2 riders by themselves near the end (not us I hasten to add)

Interestingly, we were talking with one of the VCL coaches, who said he gets alot of queries about clubs in the area, and a number of people asking about ACC, and where the rides start. But he also commented on a friend of his who is police officer having to stop a very large ACC group last year to break it up into smaller groups?
