Steam powered Brighton run

Was talking to Ben and PVT on Friday about the Brighton run behind the veteran cars - pre 1905 so lots of nice steam powered stuff and some great old cars you sit in behind and get a nice steady 20mph tow . Nice ride back through the lanes.

Well blow me but it's next Sunday (2nd Nov). Checking the diary I've got the SCCU lunch in for that day , but it was such great fun last year I'm thinking of phoning up to call that off for a Brighton run with the old cars, it really was one of my favourite rides last year.

I'm not doing that if it's p*ssing with rain like the time I went with Paul Tunnel - all that oil mixing with the rain makes for an interesting ride. I eventually forced Paul to stop so I could cape up and keep the worst off. Then just as we going through Crawley, Paul suddenly turned off the road and I nearly slid into a policeman cos my brakes were so greasy. After a tea stop it was decided to head back but after I nearly slid into Paul at a roundabout, I explained that it would be really useful if he could give me a bit more warning about stopping, turning etc, as everything was a tad slippery and it took a while for the brakes to work and my view was rather limited to ensuring I didn't slide into the back of his bike whilst hanging on for dear life to Paul's back wheel

Oh and of course there was the usual Paul T pace...

I won't do it if it's due to chuck it down either, showery then yes just use the winter bike. Brisk pace down as it's all motor paced. Last year we had a barrel of laughs with a bloke in full tweeds on an old motorised trike that he had to pedal assist up the hills with only one gear, and it was the most ludicrously small one imaginable. Definitely sticking a camera in my pocket this time.

My stomach and wallet (already paid for the ticket) have won the fight. I'm going face stuffing at the SCCU lunch. Can't recommend this ride highly enough though if it's dry. Have a good day and I'll be making sure I'm free for it next year.

An 8.30 CSS start means you get a good selection of cars on the way down, in Brighton for elevenses (at the latest) and home fairly early too.

Certainly if the forecast stays reasonable, in entirely subjective terms, I hope to be there. If so I will get there shortly before 0830 in the hopes of a reasonably prompt start. If I am not there I am not there.

This is also all dependent on my not over indulging this evening.

If rain is forecast I'd give it a miss chaps as these old cars aren't averse to dropping a bit of oil and you want to be tucked up behind them for a draft.

If you go keep an eye out at junctions as they tend to have 2 speeds - moving and stopped - so in and out of roundabouts it's worth sitting back a bit.

The forecast is cloudy so shouldn't be too much rain around. This sounds like a good fun ride so will have to try and make it out in time. If not don't wait around but did u know lots of places are opening early to serve breakfast like THe Green Dragon pub so people can watch the cars go past. Also Kinghams car dealership is an appointed mechanic stop and so will be providing tea and biscuits for anyone who is around. All things being well I intend to ride at least some of the way to Brighton and maybe get a train back.. But let u know for sure tomorrow.

I rode some of the way and got a couple of good tows. Some of those cars are awesome, am sure one of then had wooden wheels, this one car had two blokes in it, one guy was having to lean over to the side everytime they went around the corner, think this was to stop them skidding or falling over. Was great fun to watch from close range.

Didn't need to follow the route signs, just follow the oil slick.
