Marky Mark BB Tech help

Postby Marky Mark » Mon Nov 10, 2008 2:07 pm

All Bottom Bracket experts please take one step forward.

I have this spare Shimano Tiagra Crank and BB from when I took it off my Trek 1200 Aluminum frame when I swapped it for a compact.

The BB on my Look is starting to creek 'again' (Butlers had regreased it once but it didn't last long).
The creek is a worn bearing I think and I need to change it.

Does anybody know If I can use the Shimano bits in a Look Carbon frame. :?:

The other option I have is to buy a new BB, the same as is in the Look now.

Cheers
Marky Mark

PS anybody have BB tools for sale or loan?

Looking at the pictures, the Tiagra is a "Hollowtech 2" system with external bearings, and the one fitted to your Look bike is an ISIS internal bottom bracket.

What does this mean?

In simple terms (all I can use), you will not be able to use anything from the Tiagra set up with the ISIS set up. You could swap the complete bottom bracket and chainset over, but a Tiagra chainset is going to look (sic) a bit low rent on that bike.

I'm afraid, you are stuck with buying a new bottom bracket. Unfortunately, ISIS bttom brackets have a reputation for short bearing life as, to fit the large diameter axle into a normal size bottom bracket shell, they used smaller ball bearings than would be considered "optimal". Keep the receipt for the new bottom bracket, and if it fails within a year (about 50% probability going on what I've found on other forums), you have a reasonable chance of getting a warranty replacement for it. It appears that the more expensive ISIS bottom brackets are lasting (on average) longer than the cheaper ones. Do some research online about which appear to last best.

Good luck,

Grahame

I take it both pics are actually of your bits and not from the web?

If so you can't interchange the BB - first is a Hollowtech

and second an ISIS

(you can read about them here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottom_bracket#ISIS_Drive )

Before replacing anything I would check that:

a) creak does indeed come from BB
b) greasing the threads doesn't solve the problem

i have tools for both if you want to borrow

Sylv

They are actual photo's of my bikes and bits I took today.
I took the Shimano bracket apart and it is indeed the Hollotech.

Grahame

So apart from how the Look 'Looks', the complete BB and crankset would go on?

I ask because the Look is permanately attached to the turbo and the Trek is winter bike at the moment,
so If I do put the Shimano Tiagra on the look, it's only me who will see it.

Cheers Gents. Last thing, as I'm now addicted to cycling I might go and buy the tools so I always have them.
Butlers have them?

Yes the BB and crankset will go on. (But you may have to move the front mech if the chainrings are of different sizes)

Butlers will either have the tools in stock or be able to get them quickly.

On the ISIS type (LOOK), I have removed to retaining screw from the crank but it wont come off.

Is the ISIS spline a tapered one? I dont want to start hitting it yet. Do you have to use a puller on it?

I did notice that the Shimano spline come off so easily! it was parallel.

Cheers folks....

I don't think it is tapered.

You can use a "self extracting" crank bolt or a crank puller (ParK Tools make a good one) to remove the crank from the bottom bracket.

Don't hit it - your crank is made of carbon fibre.

Hitting them is bad m'kay?

I got all the tools now, all stripped down apart from one big mistake....

Forgot to take out the washer on the chain side when I was extracting the crank, had to push the extractor through the washer first. I thought it was just on there tight!! Stupid boy.

Going for the rebuild later on.....

Many thanks for all of your help.

OH MY GOD

IT'S STILL MAKING THE NOISE

Plan 'c' now. Can't possibly be the BB now.
I could just turn the radio up but I'm gonna find the bloody thing if it kills me.

At least I know alot more about stripping down cranksets and BB's

 The noise only happens on the 'Up-stroke' of the chain side crank.

I thinking outside the box now, could be the Jockey wheels as the chain changes tension from switch over from right to left leg pushing down.
It could also be body movement twisting the frame because the turbo is supporting the bike only using the rear axil. There is very little clearance between the cassette lockong ring and the inside of the frame (might be touching?).
Or, The aluminium threaded section of the carbon frame has some how become loose (y'now, the bit where the BB goes into)

Plan 'd' is to get someone the same height as me to ride the bike so I can try to identify the fault.

Plan 'e' is to get a kind sole to pop in if they are passing to have a look & listen while I ride it.

Plan 'f' burn it

Mark,

Do you get the noise on the road?

My Specialized Tarmac (carbon) creaks like hell on the trainer whereas on other days it's very quiet.

The noise on mine is coming from the seat post area confirmed by me grabbing onto the post whilst riding on the trainer.

On the road it can be quiet or creaky.

Rob Rob Rob

I thought of that and haven't totally dismissed it. (Just taking my RH off the bars stops the noise)
Can't be bothered to try it on the road as it has a home trainer tyre on it and would probably die.

If I lean to the left it will stop, if I lean to to right it gets worse (it then sounds like a scraping noise).
I do think I'm twisting something.

The noise sounds like..... Remember in the old days when washer boards were around, well run the back of our finger nail up it really fast. See, I have gone mad

I might put the FSA ISIS BB back in it now as the Shimano one looks pants on the bike.

PS Evil had a go on the turbo last night, on Joanna's loan bike.

Saddle rails can be another possible source of creaking; check the seatpost bolt(s) for tightness. Actually you should be able to eliminate this suspect from your enquiries by riding out of the saddle. If the noise is still there then the saddle and seatpost are not guilty.

Inspector Marky Mark is closing in.

It is nothing to do with anything that is rotating.
I just leant on the saddle and moved it from side to side and it creaked (not the saddle but a tad lower down).
Just need to wait for the other half to get home now as my ear wont bend down far enough to find it.

Mmmmmmmmmmm so close 8)
