[quote]chainring,£74.99 brakepads £13.98, chain£24.99, cassette£84.99, cable set£35, Bottom Bracket - Dura -Ace£29.95, Rim+Build rear£75, Hub bearing front£14, Bar tape£9.99, polar Cadence sensor£35, Tyres£57.90, labour £110 (service)£565.79 - gulp!

I have added the individual prices. I guess the labour was for the service which was a full strip down and rebuild and the frame was polished

The parts were generally dura Ace and included fitting, the rim was Easton. It was Cycle Dauphin.

I never take my bike anywhere to be ripped off...I mean serviced. I did mine myself last week. New cassette, chain, bar tape, inner brake cables, new Ultegra SL wheels for the winter (fed up of trying to change tyres on my old fulcrums as they're a nightmare) Stripped everything down and gave it a good clean and greased etc where needed all for £230 and it rides like new again. :D

I did shop around and ordrered from 4 or 5 different places but its well worth doing, saved myself at least a good £65.

I wouldn't worry though Alan, I bet your almost as rich as me

Look at it this way. Top quality parts should last at least a couple of years, even if you ride all through the winter. Labour charge - there's a good 3 hours work or more and you know everything will have been fitted correctly, greased, faced, anti-seized, whatever.
So all told you won't be needing another service or parts replacement for two, maybe three years, which puts the annual cost at probably way less than 8% original value (I have no idea of Colnagos but figure somewhere towards £4k with full DA?) to put your bike back to like new.
Bargain :D

You haven't had it five minutes! I can't believe all those bits were worn out. You been doing some secret training Mr M?

[See how I resisted the temptation to suggest you switch to alternative brands of component ...d'oh! :D ]

Quality garage. Did they shake their head while saying "It's not the parts mate, it's the labour".

Always keep the old bits and flog them on ebay.
Amazing what people will pay for used quality bike parts, especially eg a cassette, chainring and chain that have all worn together.

Oh dear that's nearly my budget for a new bike; still it's the bike that makes you go quick not the legs isn't it?! After all that's why you get to central London quicker at rush hour in a Porsche than a Mondeo, or faster on a Colnago than a Focus, at least by bike it's quicker than by car and still cheaper, even on a Colnago! I'm sure I could have found you a good bike from the dump that would last a couple of years! Pay for quality and you get quality, just the laws of diminishing returns prevail.

well ... yes I have ridden it quite a bit and enjoyed doing so - I bought it 30/1/07 so have ridden it more or less continuously for 2 seasons, between 150 and 250 miles/week, March - October

After 2 years can see why chainring, brakepads, chain and cassette need replacing.
Bottom bracket? surely should last longer than 2 years.
Cable set? I still have the same cables on my road bike for the last 8 years.
But doesn't save you much anyway.

Must admit I tend to replace parts at different times of the year and shop around for prices an do the work myself.

So I guess what it amounts to is that most of the work was done in one throw - the rim and wheel rebuild was an unexpected cost due to a crack but I knew that the bracket was making a noise and the replacement wasn't at huge cost. Large chainrings on compacts probably get the most wear. Pads and tyres I would usually do myself but while they're at it ...... the cadence meter is just a further distraction to prevent me buying a power tap or Garmin 705. I don't want to fiddle with set ups etc. or search for the cheapest parts and can I probably afford the luxury of not doing so. It seems a lot to spend and my first response was, yes I could buy another bike for that but I have peace of mind and can now preserve it in pristine condition until signs of Summer.

hey ho

See you tomorrow no doubt
