15mph average

Postby mrP(Boonen)VT » Thu Nov 27, 2008 2:53 pm

I never thought I'd be pleased the day I could average 15mph, but that's what I managed today, and it is my fastest ride to work so far, and felt really good :D :D :D

I always "adjust" for stoppage time at lights etc and take the average speed from the computer. That way a 21 mile ride over 90 minutes can be morphed into an 18.5 mph average through central London with which to impress my colleagues :D

AVERAGE :?:

Does everybody adjust for stops :?:

I'm in 2 minds about this  . I first set my Garmin up to 'auto pause' when you stop, for turning and lights etc.
But this seems to 'boost' the average, and give a false impression of what I actually done.
This means I could do fast sprints (if I wanted to) with long stops in between and then look at the figures at the end of the run and it would only average the sprints.

I have now turned the auto pause off so I get a true average of the rides I do 8) .

Is this why the figures are out when we get to Charlwood to see what the average was, what method do the VC's use to pace the CR?

With stops Mark. By that I mean I use autopause. It's a clubrun, not a training ride.
The idea is to RIDE at an ave speed, so just ride at around 15 mph on the flat and let the hills up and down average out. :)

True if you are specificaly doing sprint training, but then why would you bother with an average speed?

I always refer to the average as "RIDING TIME", hence removing any annoying stops as those are downtime with no physical effort. If you take a true average including the stop at the cafe, even the training group would struggle to beat 15mph

I always leave a bike computer on auto stop for convenience. I don't pay that much attention to it, it's just to give a guide and give some details for the ride as a whole.

Numbers on their own are meaningless.
My commute is normally at an average of about 15mph. I don't charge in just spin, it's a bit lumpy, there are lots of sets of lights . Sometimes it's quicker if I decide to have a bit of a charge on the way home, or the weather (wind) might alter the speed. A number on its own means nowt.

Mark, mainly down to experience. After a while you just know roughly how fast you are going at a given time or over a given period/distance. If you tried to check your computer all the time and keep it at 15mph from CSS to the cafe the ride would be a fair bit different as the terrain alters over the course of the route.
