Deers Leap Park CX Round 11

Postby George » Mon Dec 01, 2008 9:03 am

Back toi Deers Leap again this weekend, it had been raining all weekend and this was going to be a mudfest, Mr PVT was doubting whether his CX comeback was at the best track, he knew it wasn't gonna be a dustball rodeo, just a hardcore slog

Sylv had come down with me in the van to help out and take some photos, luckily we had a weather window for the race itself which was nice for the spectators.

The course itself was nowhere near as tricky as last time, with most of the muddy technical sections through the woods cut out, this was a shame as I really enjoyed that part of the course last time.

Off we went and visibility was tricky with lots of spray coming up from the front wheel, I was struggling with traction on the first couple of laps so I let some air out the rear tyre which seemed to help alot.

Was in 5th position and coming just going into the last lap when I had my first classic cyclocross mechanical failure, the rear deraillier gave up the will to live in all that mud and exploded. :(

So that was that, I didn't fancy running the course for a lap just for 20th position so choose to push over the line once the leader had finished.

Hopefully my luck should begin to change next round and the gremlins will leave me alone.

My first cross since 2000 I think....

Mr  would have been proud of my retro cross bike

What a tough slog that was - the cilmb on the back of the circuit was just rideable at walking pace - but the alternative was a long run  George lapped me there towards the end of the race, but wasn't going much faster :!:
The mud around the finish area meant running and carrying bike rather than trying to ride, and afterwards, unrecogniseable.
George gave me an insight into his mental approach to cross...

"if in doubt, go flat out"

With that ringing in my ears, I charged down the slippery hill and overtook at least 6 riders, then discovered that I was going tooooo fast to turn at the bottom amd slid off, caked in mud on my left hand side

At least I finished - and there were people behind me :D

Wouldn't mind trying a drier faster course :!: Dunsfold sounds good.
