Agreeable Air-lift

Postby mrP(Boonen)VT » Thu Dec 04, 2008 10:07 am

[quote]My place at pilates tonight is spare if anyone wants it. I got airlifted off a Welsh hillside on Saturday with a broken ankle. It's been plated back together but I'm not allowed to put any weight through it for 6 weeks. I asked Adam if he thought it would be OK for me to just do the sit-ups...but he pointed out that even that needs feet flat on the floor to stabilise the pelvis...so until I've been to fracture clinic and checked whether that would be OK my pilates place is available.

So understated Tamar.
Get well soon

Ouch! Get well soon, Tamar, now is the right time to break your ankle on the side of a Welsh mountain....if there is such a time?

We will have to start calling you Mrs Hoppy

Does anyone know how to put pictures on to the forum? I am technically hopeless and have been trying, unsuccessfully, to work it out for the last 15 min. I've got a pic of me lying in silver blanket with the helicopter swooping in overhead. It's also on facebook with some pics of the airlift...facebook is easier to work than the forum!

Bad luck, Tamar. It all sounds very dramatic.

Ouch.

Hope you get better soon. What exactly did you do?

Do you want to borrow my Giro D'Italia and Tour De France DVDs? George said they helped pass the time last year when he was out of action.

It was an embarassingly stupid slip on a bit of ice about half an hour into what should have been a glorious sunny day's walking. We were heading up a valley and my foot just slipped on an icy rock. I squawked and sat myself down, and unlaced the top of the boot which was suddenly feeling excruciating tight. I hoped it was just a sprain, but after a few minutes the pain was not abating and when I tentatively moved my leg my foot flopped sideways and I could feel the bones moving around just above my ankle...so I asked Keith to call mountain rescue and got myself comfy on a couple of bits of carry-mat with a space blanket over me and some rucksacks supporting my foot. Luckily there was an RAF helicopter out on manouevres and they were delighted to have something exciting & heroic to do so came and picked me up.

For the medically minded among you it's called a bi-malleolar fracture...which is basically snapping off both the bony bits that extend from the bottom of the tibia and fibula and overlap the side of the ankle joint to provide lateral stability. As I snapped them both and the fracture had dislocated slightly the docs had to wrench my ankle straight again (which was about as much fun as it sounds) and plaster me up until I went into surgery later that evening when they fine-tuned the realignment of the bones under X-ray and plated and screwed everything back into place.

Not sure when I'll be back on the bike - certainly not until well into January. Should all heal up OK though.

How very Agreeable to put your pilates place up for grabs first and explain why later. I'd have been straight in there looking for sympathy - not that I'd be up a Welsh mountain at this time of year  . Or ever.

Get well soon and don't go aggravating the problem by collecting your own mince pies from the kitchen or anything  .
