Crashing this winter

Postby andrew_phillips » Fri Dec 05, 2008 11:51 pm

Anyone else stacked it lately? I have had my second crash in a week and am starting to wonder if fate is telling me something (like buy a mountain bike for winter commuting). Front wheel doesn't seem to like staying in front of me any more this winter but thankfully got enough lard covering my bones to just get away with grazes. My bike hasn't sustained as much as a scratch which is starting to feel a bit self-sacrificial. I think this is the problem with country lanes in the morning, no cars, but no cars to melt the ice.

Commuting this week it was a bit chilly and looked like it could've been a bit icy in places so I played safe and went up Gravel Hill rather than Spout Hill. Not so nice but worth checking out to see if you can find a more main road route in for if it's a bit icy. Glad you're not damaging yourself too much but I wouldn't keep throwing myself at the floor if I were you as you might start pushing your luck :) .

Be careful out there

I thought it was just me. I've been commuting on the MTB recently with nobblyish tyres because the weather has been so crappy. Was going down a little descent on friday morning, slightly icy, turned on the slight bend and the back wheel just went. landed on my hip (bruise the size of a grapefruit), turned on to my bum, left the bike behind and slid down the hill backwards until stopped by a parked car. I got up checked bike, then myself then made sure no one was watching ( in that order). Phew no one was laughing, jumped on the bike and set off with a slight chukle to myself. I thought I'd be OK on the MTB, maybe I need to let some air out those tyres. Be careful out there.

There was a huge patch of sheet ice outside my garage this morning.

I suspect it was caused by somebody washing the mud off their bike with a hosepipe yesterday afternoon

You'll have to find out who it was and give them a good telling-off 8)

We've all been at it.... we had a good scar comparing session in the cafe a few weeks ago..

i skinned my thigh and hips on a brilliant ‘black Ice’ wipe out on box hill a month ago..

does that make me a proper cyclist now?

Guru P : Watch out for that karma coming to bite you on the bottom...

Andrew : i do hope you are alright.. Arnica tables are great for internal and external bruises... and I’m certainly a fan of the 'lard covering' its a good bit of insulation and padding , also why i don’t get cold.

MTB: Before I got road bike i did a weekly Road TT on a MTB and it made me super strong!!!!!

They'll just push him off next time :D .

Are they those sponge pad things that stick directly over road rash? I was given them for a little patch of road rash once and they were brilliant. Always wondered what they were called as it'd be useful to keep a bit in the medicine cabinet just in case. If they're not does anyone know what those sticky pad things are called?

arnica tables are a bit diffrent .......

[quote]If you're a sporting enthusiast then it's worth having some form of arnica on standby. As it reduces inflammation and swelling, one tablet of arnica C6 three to five times a day can speed up the healing of sprains, dislocations and bruising. For those who have a tendency to overdo it at the gym, one tablet of Arnica C6 three times a day should help with the muscle and joint pain caused by over-exertion. However, if there is no improvement within a day, you should see your doctor

[quote]How does it work?
Arnica works by stimulating the activity of white blood cells which process congested blood, and by dispersing trapped fluids from joints and muscles and bumped and bruised tissue. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial qualities and it is these that help to reduce pain and swelling as well as improving wound healing.

When I was little, I have this abiding memory of my Mum going in the medicine cabinet and producing some cotton wool and a dark brown "Gin" type bottle - no matter what had happened - arnica it was - in liquid form. No matter what - and on open wounds, it sure made me scream

I have to say though, that bruises disappeared really quickly.

First "proper" crash of the winter last night (off-roading mini crashes don't count).
Was about 1/4 mile from home, went into a corner that I've been round hundreds of times before, and the front wheel just slid away unexpectedly. Hit the deck and slid along the road a bit; trashed a pair of longs, minor scrapes on knee, road rash on thigh, and a little finger that's swollen and doesn't bend properly at the moment. :(

bad luck Jon, I came off just after the snow on my usual route whilst turning at a junction, trashed my bib tights and cut my knee and brusied my big toe. Almost completely healed by now and had a good excuse to buy new bib tights (the others were getting a bit worn after al least 5 winters.).
