[quote="Sylv"]Please to read that Pendleton would beat Adam in a sprint too :P

You think so?

Well, i'll probably never get her to the end of a 100 mile road race so I guess we'll never know.

That said, what makes you think I can't match that power Sylv?

Also, there's more to cycling in the UK than British Cycling and their talent teams you know...

Wow that certainly inspirational reading Huw. The future looks bright if just a few talented girls are convinced to really take up cycling seriously. Is there a similar test to help recruit aerobic queens such as - Rowsell, Romereo and Cooke? I'm guessing it would be an aerobic power test of sorts. Best effort over 3-5 minute etc

[quote]Was re-looking at the FaCT results now that I'm a little more familiar with wattage figures and well impressed with yours - have you measured your 6-secs output? Bet it's not that far from the magical 800

Thanks! :D

I believe I was putting out 800 watts for a short spurt at one point in the ACC 'B' road race in September. In the same race I think I was putting out 400 watts for about a minute. Or was it the other way round? Anyway, Huw texted me to call me a monster - I was well chuffed.

Of course I was going to bite, lets face it, it's rare that I dont!!

Put it this way, well over 1,000w, but the important bit is, like I mentioned, what you can deliver at the end of a race. And that comes down to your efficiency, I.e. all those slow miles I do, mean I can go faster at the finish, huh Toks! :P

I put in a pretty decent guess on Adam's Neuromuscular (sprinting) Power in a post last year which he didn't disagree with. He's stronger now so I guess it up a 100 watts or so. I reckon 1450-1600 now

You'll get no complaints from me Sir. If you've got lots of time to train its a proven method to building a big engine :D

I think initially they just want to get riders referred to the talent team. They then evaluate which branch of the sport they are most suited to after further testing.

ok isn't there a chance if you can't sprint you'll get missed out despite being very strong aerobically. I'm think Emma Pooley types specifically

Yeah Emma has really low peak power but she has extremely good Power to weight particularly in the 90 minute to two hour range

It's a logistical thing i suppose - it's harder to test for aerobic potential when you only have a few minutes with the girls. Interestingly the road racers tend to get discovered after coming from other sports (Emma was a cross country runner and Sharon Laws was an adventure sport competitor) where they've already displayed good aerobic conditioning

Adam is being modest  , yes I did say that
[quote="Andrew G - Cycle Show 2008 post"]BC has some of those Wattbikes (they use them to test people for the academy set up with a 6 second kick to see what their initial umph is) where you can do a test run, quickest of the show wins a signed GB jersey. No warm up and straight in I did my 200m flat out sprint in 11.25 seconds with an average of just under 900 watts (whatever that means, it's less than my hoover I know that), the gear was a bit small but they said they keep it fairly low so everyone runs the same and it allows the under 16s to have a go too. Hoy puts out around 2,000 for the same thing but then his thighs are about the same size as my waist  . If you're going have a go on it, you've got a target time to beat now :D . I had the quickest of the day at the time I did it, then again the show had only been open 1.5 hours at that stage  .

As expected I won nowt at the end of the show and didn't get a call from BC, but I did get an email with a list of the winners on it. The modest chap I mention at the top won his age category (not the overall and signed jersey but still nay bad). Well done :P .

Do you remember what you did on your run Adam? Or is it a secret kept close to your chest  .

They sure are sturdy bits of kit, have the solidity of a Brunel design.

Good stuff Huw and sounds a far more fun way of spending the day than sitting in my office.

Toks, re your comment about Pooley etc I suspect that although a lower power output it still wouldn't be that shabby. The people testing would probably ask someone like that back for a further test even if they didn't hit the magic figure they'd use some judgement on what figure was produced against the size (or lack of) the person producing it.

I can't unfortunately, I seem to remember it being a good bit lower than what I have achieved on the road though. I was having an interesting discussion with my coach, plus some BC coaches about how Watt bikes must be greasing the palms of BC well for all this publicity!!

They were set up with a pretty low gear on the day though.

If everyone's interested I'm pretty sure I can borrow a couple for an evening at the club room?

I know the BC test protocol and can coach the proper technique - so you gotta ask yourselves - DO YOU WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH
