Thought you lot might like to know that the CTC Hilly 50 is to be on 14 February :D

For those who don't know, this is a 50km ride that starts at Ryka's at the bottom of Box Hill and finishes at the National Trust cafe at the top of Box Hill - in between it fits in as many hills as possible in the North Downs between Box Hill and Ewhurst. I'm sure someone (probably  will find the exact route and post it up for your delectation.

Andrew G and others will also tell you what an enjoyable ride this is :D

I shall try and oblige :D . I don't have a copy of the map but do have a copy of the route card which I'll stick below (PM me your email if you want a pdf copy or you can download it here if you are a CTC member). You do get one when you sign in though and many of us (of all abilities and speed groups) know the route pretty well so if you ride with other Addiscombe there's a fair chance you'll be in a group with someone who knows where they're going.

It's a very good ride over a tough route, if you haven't done it before then trust me the 50kms will feel like 50 miles due to the hills. As a basic rule of thumb if you aren't going up a hill, you're probably going down one to get to the bottom of the next one you climb up  . The route wiggles about back and forwards without ever actually going far from where it starts so a map would probably be quite a wiggly mess.

The route is up and down some very quiet lanes which obviously don't all have a beautiful surface, and being early season it can often be a bit wet under tyre, worth considering if you have posh wheels and winter wheels as to which you go for on the day.

Yep there's always a few beards and the odd pannier on display, but it's also used as a sharpener for the top local racers before the season starts so expect to see just as many rockets flying up the hills at a frankly ludicrous speed. Most riders doing it are "normal" club riders - I used the inverted commas as we all know how normal some of us are  .

Anyhoo here's the route card:

If somebody could identify "Dombo" for me, I'm sure I can arrange for something to happen to him

The route and earlier variations were devised by old friends of mine who used to race but have now settled down to the quiet enjoyment of just riding their bikes because they love it. They no longer run the event - it's now actually run by the Kingston Phoenix who have quite a number of active racers (especially women) who are also CTC members.

Just had an email from the CTC with all the info of this year's ride, links to maps and routecards, and details of pre-registration to make their life easier. I've posted it in the Trips section.

John Leitch is doing a preview ride on saturday, (3rd of jan)

i thought i would go,
A Christmas Cracker
A Friends’ Group Ride with Plenty Kick

Come along if you’d fancy a hill-searching special that aims to blow away your festive overeating and get you back into the mode of serious training

……and all in less than 3 hours

Hi riders,

This is an invite to see if anyone out there would like to join in and make up a party (perhaps two if there is a spread of ability) to ride the route of the

CTC Hilly 55km

on Saturday 3 January, leaving the start-point (Ryka’s Café) at 12noon

so leaving Brockham at 11.45am….if you want to part outside/use our house.

If you’ve not done the event for real, it takes place on 14 Feb and takes in every conceivable hill within a short distance of Dorking, so you have the pleasures of…

Ranmore
Leith Hill the lower half only
Coast Hill
Friday Street the steepest-of-the-day incline
appears on the OS map with a double-chevron
so about 1-in-5l
Ewhurst big climb this is up and over to Shere
White Down the hardest climb of the day
Box Hill

The real ride in February can be made into whatever you like:
• the big racing guns, full of winter training and short on live races, go off like man-men up Ranmore
• while bringing up the rear are the CTC stalwards with mudguards and a love of quiet roads.
• In between the two categories, you have every shade of rider and ability.

To do it for real on the day and do it well, there’s some benefit of knowing what’s coming.

Please get in touch if you’d like to join in.

Late arrivals could easily pick us up at Westhumble (Ryka’s Café)…..or later in Dorking (foot of Leith Hill)…… or even later still at Westcott.

The CTC have route details on their website……it’s a good idea to carry a copy so you can get back whatever happens on the day.

Do we have to prebook or can we just turn up at Rykas? Is that the biker cafe at the bottom of Box hill?

Which one? Pre-book for the actual event but you can just turn up for John Leitch's ride - and yes, Ryka's is the greasy spoon where all the bikers meet.
