I was up there last Saturday. Very little mud and what there is is nice and hard. Sandy bits on Holmbury were good and firm too with the cold weather and lack of rain. Climb up to the viewpoint on Pitch was in excllent shape and the singletrack back down was good and dry. On Holmbury Barry Knows Best was very fast and Yoghurt Pots on the other side has been rerouted to miss out the muddy sump in the middle. Most of the tracks on Leith were good, particularly the stony, rooty climb up to the tower from the East. In short conditions up there are excellent so I shall join you, planning to drive to Westcott then ride over Leith and Holmbury to warm up

[quote="marco"]Nice one
I suggest the route we do is something like

Start Peaslake...

...go to top of deliverance and mumble about riding down it 'when its a bit warmer'!....

shock/forks at wrong pressure
insufficient body armour
roots are too wet
roots are too dry
cleats are too tight
cleats not tight enough
no QR on seat post to lower saddle
the last lot down there spoiled the line
I don't want to spoil the line for the next lot

Yeah no worries, I know the route. Might leave you at the bombholes of Leith but can point you in the right direction back to Peaslake.

The Deliverance line is easy.

"Not of your f****** life! Are you mad?! That's a f****** vertical drop AND a long way down AND full of roots sticking out all over the place!"

Seen one person ride it on a downhill bike with big shocks and full face helmet, probably had some body armour on too. He just dropped off and made it look easy. Fortunately his mate went next and was bounced from one root to the next, thrown from his bike like a rag doll and bounced to the bottom (just avoiding having his bike land on him). It looked painful and I'm grateful to him for showing how hard it is as the first bloke made it look too easy and could lull the stupid in to giving it a go.

So that's a no from me to it then :D .

I am working in Holland for Jan and Feb so will miss this. I will be back the weekend after this though (17 Jan) so was going to propose another off-road option as part of the Saturday club-run.

I take it a cross bike is not suitable then

Given that 30-odd years ago we all used to tear around the woods on Choppers and 5 speed "racers" with drops a cross bike should be fine.
Just stay off the brakes.... :D

I can't make it - I've already committed to going to a classic car event in Battersea on Sunday.

Have fun, everybody.

Just back from mountain biking in Guatemala for Xmas and New Year. Some fab descents dropping a vertical kilometer in one go ;-)

Steve and I still haven't managed to mtb with you guys. Would love to come out but we're up North! Hopefully soon...

I can give someone a lift if they need one. The only condition is that the bikes go in the boot and they'll just be lumped on top of each other so if you're precious about your MTB then best find another way.

Hi Andrew, I was thinking of coming along for a bit of a ride round Leith Hill after last week's adventure with Sylv and Serge and would appreciate a lift down there if the offer still stands?
I'm not precious about the bike.
Live South Croydon Way could make it to GB's if that's easiest pick up point.

Good ride, thanks for organising, Marco. I set off from Westcott at 0900 and caught the trails while still hard and frosty before the later thaw. Met the others at Peaslake and had a gentle ride back up to Holmbury. Yogurt Pots and Telegraph Road were good and twisty, with a handy frozen pond giving everyone but me a chance to try some ice-riding. George's gleeful "it's nice and flat so you can get some speed up!" had us all in stitches. The ice held and we headed up to Leith Hill Tower, late lunch beckoning so I had to leave the others and miss out on tea and cake, although the draggy climb up to High Ashes Farm had me comprehensively dropped by George, Kasper and Andrew. Good twisty descents down Leith got me back to Westcott at 25 mlies and a feeble (by CR standards) 8.3mph average. Hope to be back on normal road CR once the ice melts
