Charlotteville 50; 10th May

Are you thinking about starting racing? Ask about future events in here, find out what you can expect at them and who else is going so you can scrounge a lift off someone rather than riding the 30 miles to get there yourself!

Charlotteville 50; 10th May

Postby Jon H » Thu Jan 08, 2009 11:36 am

Just passing this on:-

As a past participent in the above event I would like to make you aware that 2009 is its 80th anniversary. As such it will be a special occassion in both the event and the clubs history. To celebrate this achievement there will be a series of special prizes added to the prize list. Some of these prizes will be random, such as the rider finishing 80th. There will also be a loyalty award to the rider that can prove they have completed the most rides in the event, this must include 2009.

Mark this date in your diary when planning your year. Don't miss out on a very special event.

Regards

Cheers Jon. It was in my provisional listing as I want to do more 50s this year, but now I know I've got something to aim for - 80th position :D .

It's a pretty good course. All dual carriageway, mostly flatish, roundabout at each end and one in the middle, 2 full laps and one shorter lap turning at the middle roundabout. George & Dominic both went under 2 hours in last year's event.

This course is pretty much 5 times up and down a 10 mile stretch of Dual Carrigeway, thats why it can get dull but the middle roundabout can pretty much be ridden at full bore 8)

Good fast course with only a couple of slight drags the ECCA 50 just pips this one for speed.

Well if 2 slow-coaches like that can do 25mph+ 50s on it then it must be a goodun  .

It's on the calender already.

Last year which was a good day. Nik Bowdler won with a 1.46 and Gary Birch was second with 1.48 ( a PB by 6 minutes). I was 6 minutes faster than I was the previous year but it was foul in 2007.

It's interesting that George describes it as dull. There are a couple of hills/drags in it and the road surface is a bit iffy in places but I like it. As a 50 course I prefer it to our local one. Might go hunting fast 50 times further afield next year though :D F and E courses probably :!:

A more helpful guide to those seeking 80th place might be if I tell you that I rode this course a couple of times last season and went just under 2:13 each time, finishing, er, 57th in the Charlotteville. I reckon about 2:23 should do it.

I prefer the course as a 25, but most events are on Saturday afternoons, so tricky for old people like me with family responsibilities.

The 25 course is better, because it doesn't use the more Westerley (and lumpier) section of road that is used by the 50. The 10 is even better because you don't go round the Farnham roundabout (where you can quite easily get held up).
Cue abuse from Adam...

This wasn't in my diary as I haven't received a handbook from Jon yet  but it is now.
