Ban Spanker Lane?

Now why do you think I liked this article - link :D .

A terrible idea, all the great names in Britain, particularly country lanes are fantastic. If I spot them on a map I try and include them in my ride  .

You could do quite a rude ride going up Box Hill, heading into Sussex to take in Balls Cross, Lickfold, Burpham, Ringmer, and Upper Dicker, then into Kent to visit Fairseat and Thong, and coming back via Pratts Bottom. This would of course be quite a long hard one.

Mrs I once 'tricked' me into having my picture taken by the sign announcing our arrival at Moron in Spain. It's always good if I can include Lower Upham in one of my Hampshire rides; oh and the fun we had as students in Guildford with Jeffrey's Passage.

There's nothing new in this of course. I'm sure the group of Dorset villages ending in '...puddle' were originally called '...piddle'. Appropriately enough though, the River Piddle appears to have survived  .

Edit: Nearly right, according to Wikipedia. "Many of the villages it passes through are named after it: Puddletown, Tolpuddle, Piddlehinton, Piddletrenthide, Affpuddle, Briantspuddle, Turnerspuddle. All but two of those names now contain "puddle" rather than "piddle"; a local tradition tells that the villages(certainly Piddletown) were renamed to avoid embarrassment before a visit by Queen Victoria. However, there is no firm evidence of this and Puddletown was certainly still called Piddletown into the 1950's."

A well-written as well as very amusing piece. Don't want to take such council imbeciles remotely seriously but ... Street names last for some time. Do they have a crystal ball to predict what might be a double entendre yet to emerge?

A recent favourite spotted in Kent is Fackenden Lane. Nearby is Cock Wood, Cold Blow, Fatting Pen ( a gift, that last, for any artiste with a small paintbrush). More gems are sought ...

I worked for an olde insurance company yonks ago. I was once given the job of destroying some old old archives. Going back to the time of penny red stamps, they were plastered all over the many letters I had to bin. Anyhoo, a few names belonging to some of our past clients:

Messrs: Oliphant, Bustard, Dinner, Smoker

We also had a Miss Lily Pond

Don't know about you but I think I'd rather be Mr Smith of Buttcracke Lane than t'other way round eh wot?

The City insurance world still throws up some gooduns Snoop.

I've had dealings with Mr. Titt, Mr. Clench, and Mr. Glasscock (you could always see him coming  ) over the years.

Best loss details I saw were "Man injured whilst screwing a Christmas Tree". Lost it's impact when I discovered that a christmas tree was a type of valve on an oil rig.

Wikipedia's definition of Moron ... It was once applied to people with an IQ of 51-70, being superior in one degree to "imbecile" (IQ of 26-50) and superior in two degrees to "idiot" (IQ of 0-25).

Anyone with an IQ of 71 upwards would not have stood by the sign. So she was making a valid point may be?

A former job of mine was to design Christmas Trees.
