It's the only route they know Marek. Maybe time to explore other roads :?:

What are you suggesting. Everyone knows that there's absolutely no other way to get to Charlwood, and the Pine Cafe is the only tea shop in the whole South East.

Well the risk of ice was communicated lodly as groups assembled, but as ACC is not a dictatorship the choice of route was left to each group as it saw fit.

Both sets of 17s went for a "down the A217 direct to the cafe" approach with a view to a longer ride after tea and cake once things had warmed up a bit. Most people went back via Box Hill, and a small group of us chose to do most of the "out route" in reverse after going over Stan Hill to join the route at the T junction just before Newdigate.

By the way - I hope those that hurt themselves heal quickly.

Sorry to hear these tales of woe and hope you all mend quickly and feel better soon. No ice here either, but then you probably don't want to hear that! 8)

Mmmmmm......you'd better have a word with Paul H then.

Maybe a better choice would have been to goto Hillingdon? Well done!

After the dancing on ice shenanigans I decided to head straight back the way I'd come, with a minor detour for a cuppa at Fanny's.

[quote="Andrew G"]I was never going to be on the CR today as I wanted to go to Decathlon to get a tent for the Tour of Wessex - got one of those 2 second ones, they're amazing. Managed a very swift erection in the flat and it folds back down pretty quick too, although it might take a bit of practice before I can get it down to the 15 seconds they say you can do it in once you get the knack. I didn't book the camping when I registered and there's no link on the website to do it retrospectively, I've emailed Pendragon but if anyone knows how to do it I'd be grateful if you could let me know.

There's a downloadable entry form on the website which has a page for booking camping. I'm just going to fill in that part and write a note on it to say I've already entered online.

[quote="Andrew G"]PS when it's icy A23 then left along A25 to Westerham and then cut up Polhill is a reasonable, and not too busy route. Also if you head back to Purley and then right, up the hill to Sanderstead and then right through Warlingham and on towards Titsey, left at Titsey and down Botley to Westerham, from there either left to pick up Polhill or right to go back along the A25 to Reigate would be a pretty good, not too busy, but main road route. Either skip a cafe stop or use Polhill Nursery or if the last option then pick one up in Godstone/Oxted.

Or the cafe in Westerham by the green is pretty good and is a regular cyclists' stop.

I second the Westerham Green cafe idea. They do very good lunches, too.

Sorry to hear abour your woes, Kasper, Kevin!

well, I headed off on the usual club run route by myself, thanks to a bunch of ACC guys coming back for warning me about the ice. I took it a bit easy after Reigate and the worst bit was just after the golf course, it was slushly more than ice and fine for a solo rider. I wouldn't have liked to do it in a group though. Then most of the roads were ice free after that.

I stick to the usual club run route mainly because I can use it as a marker of fitness levels - I now only have a basic bike computer so it helps me gauge my fitness by sticking to the same route. For example I know it usually takes me 45min to get to CSS, then another 45min to another marker etc.

Cheers.

Glad you made it around unscathed, Kieran. Saw you coming up the Merstham steps as three of us were coming back down and didn't have the presence of mind to warn you off the lanes. I would have felt dreadful if you'd suffered the same fate as the others!

I was in the 18mph group, the one following the ill-starred 19s. Saw the carnage there and decided to head straight back whence I'd come with Andy and Steve (DeVer). Hope everyone that was hurt - Kevin and Kasper were the most visible casualties - is comfortable and on the mend.

This was my first outing on a bike other than my commute since October, and my post-Christmas drop in fitness was more pronounced than usual. To the extent that I got dropped on the Merstham steps (going up) by a bunch of blokes on fixies and in silly hats. So although I would have preferred it to have been in different circumstances, I was quite happy to turn back for the early bath.

Sorry to hear about your 'dancing on ice' as opposed to 'dancing on the pedals' Kasper and Kevin.

Hope you mend up real good soon.

Dave - prising this lot away from their comfort zone is, well, nigh impossible. Being a CTC girl I wasn't too impressed with the Gatwick diversion - only John Cz could 'enjoy' such a main road route and the smell of aviation fuel  but it was ice-free and quite good for my self-esteem. I know you were keeping the pace back but it felt good to be sitting comfortably in a group again; just got to work on the strength and stamina

Anyway, I've been plugging away at alternative routes and some people have taken them up. Don't forget, my loyal groupette, Balcombe next Sat (unless the weather is so bad that even I don't want to go out in it :D )

Well, we've had all the news on Kasper, how's Kevin and any other wounded?

Oh Kieran, you and all your markers :D :D Actually I like reading your posts because like me you rarely go on group rides. We of course do the ultimate group rides which start on the 21st of April this year

Kev and Kasper I hope you heal up sharpish!

me and my markers! quite handy - for instance I know (thanks to my markers!) to keep away from Hillingdon and Hog Hill for the moment as it would only be a waste of money and an unpleasant cycle through north london.

I miss the club run as it would mean leaving too early (I like to see the children in the morning before I go). Also sometimes the groups are too big - for training I think small groups work best - giving you enough time on the front or solo where you can decide how hard to go and how long to rest etc. The training group is not too big but is too fast for me at the moment and is usually one of the first groups to leave anyway!

Luckily also seeing as it was the 'k's that were injured, being a 'k' (Kieran) I would probably have met the same fate as Kevin and Kasper.

How's the blog goin'?
