please recommend a pump

Hi there

After failing to adequately inflate my tyres after repeated punctures on a long ride in the rain yesterday, leading to a long wet walk to a station, I need a new pump. What is the ACC consensus?

I really like the "footpump" style of operation...

It's much easier on the hands (than other pumps I've used) when inflating tyres to a high pressure

Hmm, i guess i was trying to stay with a mini pump (partly so i can stick in a backpack for mtb use) but then it was a miserable walk!

will: voting twice on different fora won't swing it. but i will have certainly have a look at one of those in a shop

Another vote for the Zefal if you want a proper pump, as good as a track pump, and clips neatly in to the main triangle of the frame (unless it's all curvy and carbon in which case it might be more difficult). I find pretty much all mini pumps have at least one limitation, some are better than others though and I've got a topeak one (forget it's name - pocket rocket or something which I use on my nice summer bike) which is better than most others I've tried. I can get a reasonable pressure in with it before I turn blue - say 70psi which is enough for a lightweight like me to be able to continue. I never believe what's said in adverts etc, getting 100psi in with a mini pump is very hard work and takes loads of pumping (small stroke length) and those that claim 120 easily .

ok, i think i might pick up one of those zefals, at least for winter use. the bike is a merlin so no problem with fitting a frame pump.

have now found lezyne also do a mini floor-pump, suspect it wouldn't fit easily in a jersey pocket or on frame though: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Lezyn ... 360040907/

I had a play with the Lezyne pumps at the London cycle show. Beautifully finished, little works of art they are. I like the separate hose on their pressure drive mini pumps, which reduces strain on the tube valve. I'll be getting one for myself.

I've bought the largest Lezyne pump (nearer frame fit length than minipump) so will review it shortly -- I will make sure I test it thoroughly in the warm and dry!

You should be looking for:

something with a thin barrel (makes it possible to get to higher pressures)

something with a long barrel (gives more leverage - easier to pump)

something that has a handle with good grip, like a t-shape handle.

AVOID DUAL ACTION PUMPS, makes it too hard to get to high pressures.
