Herne Hill Cyclocross 15th round

Postby George » Sun Jan 25, 2009 6:45 pm

A wet morning greeted us but fortunately the rain held off for our race but much of the course was swamped with water and the field was very sloshy and really hard to keep the cranks spinning round.

Hey where was everybody today I was the only Agreeable at the Hill.

All the singletrack sections round the back and side of Herne hill were the slipperiest I'd ever seen, I really had to concentrate to keep upright.
Got a fair start into 6th or 7th place, I was struggling today round the grass, I think I was a bit fatigued as I didn't have my usual power on the field.
But once I got into the perimiter everyone else just went backwards sliding all over the place and I was hollaring and whooping with glee loving the sliding around. Here I made a few places and was up just behind Jody Crawforth :D . and the Arctic boyz.

Stuart Jones(London Phoenix) and Andy Waterman(Dulwich Paragon) were on a charge and I couldn't keep with them today.

Just as I was getting into the swing of things my rear mech EXPLODED  AGAIN :x right at the far side of the course, I had no option but to dump the bike and run Hurdle Stylee across the circuit to get my MTB which was primed and awaiting any mechanical malfunctions of my Cross steed.
I then picked up the MTB and ran back to where I had the mishap and got on my way again, to much applause from the crowd

The MTB was much slower on the grass but super grippy in the mud round the sides and I could ride most of the banks easily with my low gears and fat tyres.

I must have lost a whole heap of time with this episode and on the last lap Jody lapped me and took the checkered flag.I lost a few places in that kerfufle so finished down a few places from where I deserved but HEY HO I still finished cos nothings gonna stop me form racing my bike

Sorry mate, I saw the weather and realised it was going to be more of a mud plugging day (which I don't really enjoy as I get fed up sliding about and seeming to make such slow progress for all the effort you're putting in) which your report seems to confirm. So, I donned my big girl's blouse and stayed at home. Actually a combination of food shopping, washing and ironing so in hindsight I'd rather have been there rolling about in the mud.

Shame about all your mechanicals George, maybe you need to try and get titanium rear mechs to be able to cope with all the power you throw through them :D .

Awwwwwww George I bottled out from coming to watch.

Well done for finishing that race and the whole cross season so well - did you get to shake Jody's hand in the end then?

Good stuff George. You must have surprised a few people, coming charging past them on a different bike after doing your swap. Do you reckon doing it that way was better than running the rest of the lap with your broken bike to the pits?

I was going to do this one - I'd sorted out the gears on my bike after the chain broke last time and it was ready and waiting to go. Then I went out for a few beers last night and didn't get home till 3 o'clock this afternoon.

[quote="marco"]well done george
you just got to sort out a singlespeed cross bike with slime filled stans tyres that wont let you down for next season!

Sounds good Marco maybe a plan.

The funniest moment of the race was when John Mullineaux from London Cyclesport was there taking pictures, (HOLY sh1t) he had just stepped around the corner and saw how bad the conditions were at the far side of the course just as I was aproaching

One of our Dulwich Friends had a nightmare over the hurdles.
