Group riding etiquette

Worth a read for all.

I know I am not alone in my opinion that an ACC club run is not always the safest place to be on a Saturday morning.

Apart from the rule about peeling off, and maybe calling out (though he has a point), it is an excellent resource for new (and a lot of old) riders.

That is actually a good read and very well layed out and clear,

BUT......

Will it not confuse the pack as we don't 'rotate' like that, of course I'm only speaking for the slow groups.
Maybe there are different rules for the speedy pants.

I don't mind how we do it, but as long as we all know which way to do it.

Yeah, thats why I mentioned the peeling off.

The way most english groups, including ACC, will peel off, as far as I'm aware anyway, is that the rider at the front right, moves over to the left at whichever intervals are appropriate. Like thru'n'off, just slower.

I believe this is called Belgian circles?

The swinging off the front and straight round to the back method is more suited to a small group in a racing situation, such as a team time trial or a road race breakaway. In those situations the group will generally be riding in single file.

Trying to use that method in a clubrun group that's already riding two abreast means the group becomes 3 or 4 abreast, and the person swinging off to the outside could swing off straight into the path of an overtaking vehicle. And if the group is riding properly there shouldn't be a space on the inside for someone to swing off that side.

This is how the club I sometimes ride with in Cardiff do it, peeling off to the side. Prefer our way.

yep, I think forour roads rotation is better, also need to remember that the highway code allows 2 abreast but advises signle file in some situations.

The article does not mention the effect of food. Outward CR, particularly when led by Monty and other VCs, have the discipline of a platoon of Guards. Once we're fed and watered and on the return leg, we are as disciplined as a herd of cats

Interesting read. I’m not sure on the rule 9: yelling. I personally find it useful to hear someone yelling hole or car up/down and with a hand signal, especially when at the front or back of the group. I guess the trick here is to make sure the message is passed on in enough time and also depending on the size of a group.

The yelling one is the most contentious point I think.

You can rotate however you like, or not rotate at all in some cases if like Dave K and I you want a good work out, and your going quick enough that those behind dont want to come through!

But yelling for hazards shouldn't in theory at least, be neccessary. As pointing it out, particularly holes, is a better way of showing where the hazard is. However, I can recall several instances where very experienced riders (in one case I'm talking world champs riding level!) where we don't always pay attention (a mobile phone was involved in this particular instance!). The result was a very expensive pair of wheels passing, with flying colours I may add, a test that appeared in Cycling Weekly just a few days later!!

So it really is a dodgy one. It kind of depends on the experience of the riders, so I think the best bet is that verbal calls are made on all ACC rides! And yes, if your 3 wheels down the group, repeat the call for those at the back (if the group is much bigger than that...)

Apart from the rotation bit.....oh and the bit about the single rider riding with their front wheel between the rear wheels of the riders in front with the riders behind overlapping with his front wheel. That bit is complete sh*te.
