I'm planning to do the first two Surrey League 'beginners' races at MOD Chertsey on Sunday 22nd February and Sunday 1st March. There is a race for women only 3rd and 4th cats, beginning at 10.01am. The men's 4th cat race begins just before at 10.00am.

These will be my first ever races :shock: , so I would really appreciate some company! I'm not sure what makes them beginners races, though apparently there is coaching included. Perhaps just the fact that they are so early in the season?!

You can get more details on the Surrey League or Britsh Cycling websites. You'll need a BC racing licence to enter (a pretty hefty £68 but you will get a discount on your first one for being a member of Addiscombe, and it includes BC silver membership). I think that you can also get a day licence for £10 - I expect someone else will be able to confirm this - though obviously if you're planning to do a few races this year it makes sense to get an annual licence.

Let me know if you're interested. It would be really great to get a few more women starting racing this season, and I've been told that these are a good place to start!

Previously they have done them as a sort of training session with an experienced racer in with you to act as a sort of minder and adviser. Some are bound to be new to riding in a bunch (you'll be way up on them having plenty of group riding experience) and it may seem a bit tame to start with. If they've said it's a 8 lap race then what they've done is do 5 or 6 laps as a coaching run with your minder offering advice where needed, and making sure that people ride safely, and then the last 2 or 3 laps will be a proper run for the line. If you've never raced before then it should be a pretty good intro in a safer environment as if anyone does something stupid they'll soon be put in their place.

There are 2 very small kick ups/lumps at the back of the circuit, pedal down them and momentum carries you at least half way up the other side (almost to the top of the first one). In the 4th cat races I did there loads of people freewheeled down and then scrabbled about for gears to go up the other side. It was quite pathetic to watch really, particularly a few laps in when they should have cottoned on. Pedal down and you'll save a lot of energy and make up places if needed very easily. Oh and the finishing straight is verrrrrrrrrrrry looooooooooooong and always seemed to have a headwind when I went there so don't get stuck on the front there for too long.

One thing to note is that in the first car park where you sign in and can have a warm up riding round in circles you aren't allowed to leave your car. The circuit is just over a bridge further in behind the barrier and everyone drives round together so be aware that if you don't have someone to drive your car for you then you'll want to be able to put your bike in the back and slip on some shoes to drive round. It's not a problem and I've driven round to the circuit with the bike fully assembled and laying in the back with the boot up. You will also have a little while when you get round there to sort yourself out again before launching straight in to the race. It's just worth being aware of as the first time I went there I didn't know and rode to the circuit, then got a call shortly before the race saying I had to go and retrieve my car so had to charge back and forth and sprint up to the line.

Andrew is right about the hill, so beware as if you have a reasonable bunch then when you are nearer the back then you will get the concertina effect, which basically means that as those up ahead slow on the hill it flows back so you will have to slow earlier than the riders nearer the front. Moral of this is when you get to the lumps stay close to the front or choose a line that takes you down the left side of the hill as most people tend to stick to the right hand side. Therefore you will be able to overtake a load if you pedal down the hill and over the other side, this is normally the place that I use to move up the peleton.

And Andrew is right, if its going to be a bunch finish then hold back before going to the front, it is deceptively hard that final straight as it is a long way. Just sit 4th wheel or so from the front and give it everything in the last 200 yards or so.

Thanks guys for your advice and encouragement. I will be sure to stay at the front going up the hills and off the front on the home straight, until my final sprint, no doubt to victory :wink:

They haven't said how many laps the race will be - though it does say 30 miles :shock: The training session idea is quite reassuring, but the idea of racing (or even just riding non-stop) for 30 miles is pretty scary in itself!

Now I just need to find some team mates :roll: Actually though, I'm pretty sure there are a few who are planning to start racing, you might be surprised.

From memory each lap is 2 miles, but Ant is right, the time will fly by. The training session bit at the beginning will be included in the race distance and will be at an easier pace so everyone can stay together and your minder can coach the whole group.

Good on you girls for targeting this one. It's a pleasant circuit with a bit of everything. Long flat straight section, a couple of turns a short testing climb, a fast descent. It's just under 2 miles round.

My recollection of this is that your total riding distance on the day (including training laps and racing) will be about 30 miles. The actual race would probably be less than 20miles if that. The level will be fairly similar - a number of women who have experience of sportives, club runs or triathlons. As it's a London Dynamo promotion I suspect that Charlie Blackman will be on hand to help out with the ladies' coaching. Take lots of tips from her - she's good :D

Hey Chloe, Cool - I was starting to get worried I'd be the only one! Let me know what Kate and Monica say. Surely the prospect of Dad and Toks coming as cheerleaders would be enough to entice any girl into racing. :wink:

My 'training' is going very well thank you Toks. It consists of riding with the 17s, doing two turbo sessions a week (one of which invariably missed :wink: ) and a core strength building session (also often missed - sorry Snoop :oops: ). This exacting schedule will culminate in a week's training camp in East Sussex the week before the race itself.
