A change of plan

Postby Andrew G » Sat Feb 14, 2009 8:41 pm

Well LEL is now a no-no for me :( .

I've always fancied doing a LEJOG but when LEL came up I thought here was a good way to do a similar ride of the same distance but not have to worry about the organisation as it would be sorted out for me, allowing me just to concentrate on riding my bike. , what organisation!

I sent my deposit in early to reserve a space and had confirmation that it had been received in December 2007. Since then nada, nowt, not a sausage. I haven't heard a single word from the organisers, and the website hasn't been updated since it was first made active in mid 2007!

Ne emails, no letters, no route sheet, no info about the controls, nothing. The only place where there is any info is the yacf forum which is a bit of an audax hangout - good for info about dynamos and panniers  . This info does not exactly fill me with confidence though as even experienced audaxers are asking all manner of questions which don't (to me) always seem to be answered satisfactorily. There's even been a few questions on there from the organiser!

I don't like to bail on a target but in doing something of this size I want to feel reassured that the organisation would be there to support me to the standard that it says it will, and the complete lack of any contact or update for over a year (and the other reservations mentioned) does not give me any confidence in the organisation of it. For a few hundred kms that's fine but for 1,400 I want to know that I'm not going to be abandoned too much.

It's a bit of a pisser as I'd been looking forward to this and even as far back as last year was starting to prepare with the 12hr being done, initially, as training for it.

Speaking to Brian he too has reservations but has some Audax experience (and it's "organisational" ways) so is still planning to do it. I wish you all the best and hope it works out okay in the end.

Plan B

This year I was going to do the 24hr instead but to sort out the support and travel and accommodation arrangements for all doesn't make it that feasible this year. So instead I'll do the SCCU 100 (so at least I'll get another BAR for that) and the ECCA 12hr again - so not a complete wimp out :P .

Next year I do plan to revert to my original idea and do a LEJOG. Initial thoughts are 150 miles a day (so 6 days) and pretty much self supported (rack pack and bar bag for kit, and B&Bs each night - I have more faith in my own organisation for this than that demonstrated by the LEL folk. I'll let people know when this may be next year nearer the time as it would be good to have some ACCers with me and I know a few of you have also got this on your "to do' radars.

Andrew I thought I was reading a Zoom airways story there, like they've got your money and legged it off.

Its quite a long way off still, indeed you need to feel fully confident on the organisation to help put your mind at ease, They still have time and I'm sure it will all go ahead as planned they've probably just have got a website like our very own clubs which needs a little input.

What are other people saying on the Audax forum? are they thinking the same thing, what really made you change your mind?

[quote="marco"]Now youve got the mtb dont forget youve got access to a whole world of 6, 12 and 24 hour events in which its entirely possible to be self supported, and to have a kip for an hour or two in the middle of the night if you need it

Yes, SDW is a good 12hr ride, while SDD (South Downs Double) Winchester-Eastbourne-Winchester is doable in 24 hours. Record now stands at 21 hours for that and apparently only 3 people have done it.

They're not that organised.

True it is a little while off but I've been planning things (bike, kit, holiday etc) around this for a long time and haven't taken the decision to DNS lightly, I spent a fortnight trying to to convince myself that it would all be okay and making up excuses for the organisers but in the end for something of this size I (personally) need more assurance from them. It may be down to me not being up to speed on Audax style of doing things but it all seems a bit wing and a prayer. Most volunteer run things are run to a very high standard and there is no reason in my mind to excuse some of the ineptitude that's been displayed. For example all you'd need to do is set up an email group and add names as people registered, then ping out a short email once a month from say mid 2008 to update progress - we've checked x and y, recce'd this section of route etc to keep people informed. They can't be sorting out all the details in the last few months. This isn't the first time the event has been run and the route and organisation can't be that different from previous runnings of the event. I've had a couple of emails which have been unanswered and to receive no contact from an organiser about an event like this I think is appalling.

It all feels too vague to me. If I was doing my own trip or going on a touring holiday then I'd have no problem sorting it out, the reason to do this was to avoid doing that and have experienced hands doing it for me and providing some support so I didn't have to carry around full touring gear. They've given me no confidence in their ability to run the event effectively. It probably will turn out "alright on the night" but I'm not prepared to dedicate a season, holiday, and more money to something that may end up okay. If they can't be bothered to contact me for over a year then I'm not happy to start an event with them in charge of it - there's not that many people riding, hundreds (and in some case thousands) less than a sportive so it's not as though it's that difficult to contact everyone. I don't see why I should pay £150 for what I'm in theory (although without any evidence) getting from them when I could do my own LEJOG for example and use that money to fund the B&Bs on that.

[quote="George"]What are other people saying on the Audax forum?

There's a bit of chat between the uber-hardened Audaxers about what they are planning on doing etc but some of it is a bit cliquey and these are people who do PBP every year so difficult to compare myself to. There have been a lot of post over late 2008 to now concerning a lack of contact or info. There have been some answers posted very recently but some are only little one liners rather than just posting, or better, emailing all registered riders with comprehensive details covering all topics raised by people. It's left to me to have to try and hunt around through the internet (the forum has never been mentioned by LEL or people told that that is where info will be put) and piece things together. Numerous posts scattered about over a variety of threads on a forum that they (the organisers) haven't told you even exists.

:D Definitely be up for that, but it could push LEJOG back another year.

I agree with you Andrew, the organisation is not up to scratch. When I have seen anybody mentioning this on the forums the stock response is 'it's all done by volunteers' That may be but for Audax UK's flagship event, it is not good enough. The other thing that did annoy me when I was looking at it was places being reserved by foreign riders through 'block booking' effectively wiping out 50 or 60 places at a time.

I will be interested to see how they are going to fill the places of people who DNS. Apparently there is going to be list and they will be filled by that. As Andrew has mentioned if you are dedicating at least 6 months of your time, money and holidays to achieve this I would want something a bit more definite than your name is on a list and you will just have to see who does or doesn't turn up

Might join you both in 2010 though :D

Isn't almost every amateur event volunteer-run? In this and every cycling club I've belonged to, also my running club, Blackheath & Bromley Harriers, the great majority of the volunteers' work is excellent and selfless. There are so many diverse challenges in cycling much more worthy of support.
