Team Cross Champs

Postby George » Sun Feb 15, 2009 6:53 pm

We managed to get an Agreeable team together for the Team CX champs at Wilmington school near Dartford.
This is a boys school with huge grounds and the course was great with a mixture of everything from fast flat out grassy playing fields and tricky decents where some of the girls I encountered were screaming with fear  to short sharp steep climbs that required a fair amount of Tennis grunting to be able to ride up them.

In the team we had Aoden on a his and hers matching red planet x
Fred at his first cross on his nice black Kinesis crosslight and myself just hanging in there all crossed out.
Unfortunately I didn't even get to see Monica who Fred insists he saw at signing on.

Off we went and charging round the fields, I was finding it heavy going today, grimacing in pain but remembering to smile and whoop to all the spectators and cameras.

There was a nasty lump on one fast straight where a Dulwich rider had taken a nasty collar bone fall, another patient for Dr Laser I think.

Chris Ansell took me and I didn't have the power to respond and pretty much thats how it panned out for me, the harder I pushed the harder it was as I struggled to keep Kev and Andy from Dulwich in sight.

Lapped Fred in the woods as I was hollering something or other, my friend Olimpiu was there to hand me up a drink each lap which I gladly took. On the last lap lapped Bryan Taylor who cheekily with good intention blocked me into the bushes as I passed him

I found that a really tough race and well done to Fred for giving it a go, we all managed a team finish. Back at the HQ there was a prize ceremony for the whole London League were I was awarded my trophy for 3rd place and the Arctic squad grabbed the team champs for the race

I need a bit of a rest now from racing so am gonna take a few days off as the TT season opens for me next weekend

Today was great. I really enjoyed my first 'Cross race. In what other sport would you experience all the emotions in only an hour? Extreme terror while trying to decend a muddy trial with shouts of "On your left" "On your right" & "Get out the 'k-ing way!" Then fits of laughter as George overtakes a rider shouting "Number 11; your time is up!" (I was number 34). And pure relief when hearing the sweet sound of the bell, and knowing you're only a lap away from (bearly) surviving your first 'Cross race. I really suffered today, but it was all worth it. Come September I might even try it again!
George; after today I have even more respect for the 3rd place you got in the league; well done!
(PS. I feel like a bit of an idiot for saying that I saw Monica. I actually saw Maria, and only later realised that she no longer rides for ACC and that I got names mixed up; Sorry to all. I should probably get out on CRs more often...)
