ACC Web review

Bit of an aside but is it me or is the forum getting a mess, especially the 'announcements' at the top. I think the important stuff such as cr conduct code, list of officials, where to get the kit, occasional announcements, etc need to be tidied up and sorted out to be clearer: they're starting to get lost in a welter of replies and temporary announcements.

ie the information up there should be the static stuff that's amended as necessary rather than added onto.

Don't know who did the Kingston Wheelers site but I think it was a member but it's worth a look for how they've laid things out - don't have the address to hand but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Lot's of good points here peeps. I particularly like Keith's idea where we can post experiences of memorable rides, be they Marmotte's, Dragons, Etapes, or Nove Colli.

One that I'd like to make is that everything should be easily accessible from the main title page, be it addiscombe.org or whatever. For example, the digest link was in the above post from Sean but I cannot find it any other way.

If I were a potential member, seeing us out on a club run, the obvious thing is to google the club name. All that does is take you into this forum or an old page that looks pretty much as it did in 2004. Other clubs I've googled, eg after seeing their riders on sportives, tend to have a clear home page from which everything else has a clear link:

This makes it easy to find out what the club is about and sign up for membership. I have no expertise in this website design area I'm afraid, but can only suggest what I like and what works for me as a user.

I liked the KW one for simplicity but it was poo-poo'ed for some reason .

The [url=http://redhillcc.co.uk/index.aspx]Redhill[/url] one is the best I've seen lately. Looks pretty slick, lots of info and pictures, tabs for different sections, a calendar, and a maps section which includes googlemaps of rides of interest for them (meeting points, places they go, TT courses they use).

to my mind the front page is too content heavy, reminds me of one reason why google won the search engine wars, yahoo et al had very crowded front pages. But the Redhill site has many good points- the tabs especially - and most people will be used to them now.

Redhill looks very busy imho and I would guess that there's quite a lot of code behind the scenes that makes it all happen?

I reckon it would make sense to start the new ACC site small and grow it bit by bit rather than go for a big bang approach

I must admit to quite liking the simplicity of the layout of the Dynamo site (although am not keen on that funny image stuff when you click on links)

I like Marco's idea of using simple tools to build something that can be easily maintained

A good site Toks, but.....showing Vimeo on the web page is something I've been putting on the [url=http://agreeabledigest.typepad.com/agreeabledigest/video/]Digest[/url] for ages.

At the moment the plan we're on limits its scope for development, so I'm going to ask for more funds to allow for the Digest to be developed with 100% customisation built in from the start.

you mean a full movable type install on the acc server, rather than the hosted typepad service? if you want to get something going to demo i am happy to install it, transfer existing data etc given ftp details etc. it's free isn't it?

ps and then work out theming, plugins etc etc from there
