Redhill CC Sporting TT

Postby Keith » Sun Feb 22, 2009 1:24 pm

Joined the pointy helmet brigade for my first pukka Time-Trail. I felt a little out of place amongst the aero wheels and tri bars, but I really quite enjoyed the event.

Nearly a disaster at the start though. They weren't wrong about "at least 10 minutes" from HQ to the Start line. I got there to see number 26 pulling away. Clipped in then foolishly back-pedalled 1/2 a turn and my chain promptly fell off  . A big thank-you to the starter who popped it back on. Managed to keep my cool and pulled away with just a couple of seconds lost.

Luckily I'd recce'd the course previously, so I knew what to expect - lots of rolling hills. Rode the entire event on heart rate (sorry Toks) as I didn't want to blow up half way around.

Anyway, the results from a respectable Addiscombe turn-out:

    9 Ben Fancourt 55:05
    11 Dominic Lowe 46:26:0
    20 George Brent 43:52
    24 Paul Hone 46:25:5
    27 Keith Lea 48:24
    44 Matt Chapman 47:46
    53 Andrew Green 54:06
    59 Douglas Shaw 57:27

Good to see some Addiscombe support at the event as well. I think Doug deserves a mention - by the look on his face back at HQ, he'd definitely given his all!

The fastest time? Pete Tadros with a course record breaking 40:50!

[quote="Andrew G"]I can tell you mine now:
Time = poor

Hey I was right :D . Looks like my do bugger all training method is working  .

I don't really like Sporting TTs, oh yes they are often on some nice enough country lanes which attracts some that wouldn't normally TT, but and it's a big but....there's too many damn draggy bits (and/hills) on them for me  . My theory of trying to race myself fit with these Sporting TTs has resulted in me entering 6 of them I think, oh dear what have I done  .

As it wasn't that far away (about 20 miles) I rode out and rode my normal road bike and left all the go faster pointy bits and bobs at home, if I could get evens it should be okay for now on this course as I'm not doing any (for me)proper racing (i.e. non-sporting so times I'll be more interested in) for a couple of months.

Unlike Keith I hadn't recce'd the course. I knew the hill at the start as it's on the Hilly 50 route, and knew most of the other bits so thought it'd be okay - the far section of the course overlaps with the SCCU Sporting 10 course. There were no real surprises although it did feel like there were more drags than I remembered and someone had made them a bit longer too :? . I'd had a brief chat with Pete Tadros at the start and said I'd see him again soon, I did it took only 9 and a bit miles for him to take 7 minutes out of me  . He is incredible as he just flies around these type of courses and having got a course record 2 weeks ago (albeit only for a few minutes before someone else beat him) it wasn't a surprise to see him win today, but he took over a minute off the course record too!

My time wasn't very good (I'd have liked a couple of minutes quicker) but I just about got evens and couldn't really expect much more off the back of a lack of training and winter beer.

Great times by Paul, Matt and Keith, and Dominic, and George must have had wings on his bike. Nabbed a cuppa and a bit of cake before having a ride home with Ben and 2 Robs, who'd ridden out and supported, back over Box Hill.

A well organised event with good marshaling so thanks to Redhill.

The Redhill Sporting 18. Straight to Hell - with in head song assistance from The Clash..

The plan, survive. The target, sub 1.05. The stretch, under the hour. Experimenting with no hrm/garmin/speedo - how's that gonna work.

I'm the last carrot in Sainsbury's, 2nd last man off. Pete Rocket Man Tadros is a minute behind me and the geezer in front of me is a DNS. I'm not looking forward to this - my head is in the wrong place, mentally like, it's still physically attached to my shoulders

Spin off from the start down a short hill before getting slammed in the chest by the 1 in 8 fun of Coast Hill. I wonder if I can hold Tadros off until the top. 3/4 of the way up and I'm in a right old state, good job I don't have the hrm on as it would've burst. I made the summit and whooooosh, yer man goes past me like I'm rolling back down the hill. Hey ho, that'll be the last I see of anyone (cept the helpers) until the finish.

This course has precious little going for it. It rolls, mostly upwards, and some of the road surface is v poor. So is my fitness level. I never felt good out there today, never got on top of things, never managed to carry the downhill pace up the next hill.

Two photographers and no tongues out from me, just the bitter twisted face of pain. As I'm hauling my ass round the course I'm thinking, "there ain't no way I'm gonna hit target, no way". I need some of that hypnotherapy.

After what seemed an eternity, I pass a sign telling me I had five miles to go. Ahhh, something to focus on. This gave me a small boost and I'm sure I managed to push on from here. Four miles to go. Oooh, another one.

[quote]You wanna play mind-crazed banjo

The rest is pretty much a blur as I emptied the tank of the little gas that remained. I crossed the finish line and then began the longest roll back to race HQ I've ever had. I got back and felt awful. I didn't quite manage a puke but it was close.

[quote]Can you cough it up loud and strong

I'm pleased with my time of 57.27. It's at the top of what I could expect after a winter training regime of (mainly) cake and darts. Paul Hone asked if I was hungover, I must've looked rough. With hindsight, that small glass of port I had before retiring might not've been the smartest idea. Well done to all the ACC riders today and thanks to Rob RE for the shout. Well done to Redhill CC, a real killer ride, well marshalled.

What a great turnout we had of Agreeables this morning, I bet the organizing Redhill club couldn't believe it.

Well I'd gone and got my first 0 number which meant I was seeded as one of the fast boyz and on paper there was only 4 riders who could beat me, but I wasn't gonna let them all do that.

Boom and off the start line, down the hill then whop straight up the 12%er in the small ring I'll let you know, kept a straight face for Paul J Wright the photographer at the top.

Got into a good aero tuck nice rhythm and just concentrated on my breathing in though the nose to the bottom of the diaphragm and out through the mouth to help eradicate all that nasty lactate acid buildup from the legs.

No technical equipment for me today the HRM and Speedo were back in the drawer in my garage and are staying put as I just want to get into the zone with no distractions. Today it helped as I don't think I even had the time to look at a computer as my mind was too busy concentrating with keeping the rest of my body working hard.

Felt good and strong throughout and even had enough in the tank to open it up over the last 4 miles to the finish, the only time I went into the red was when I got changed afterwards in the back of my van

I knew I was on it today and back at the HQ was confident of an improvement over last year, I was duly granted with a course pb of over a minute which was good enough for 4th place on the day. I wanted to get into the top 5 before so thats a good day at the office for Mr Brent :D

Passed Ben just before the flag and didn't even notice.
Nice one Paul for giving it a go, shame you didn't really seem to feel to comfortable on your bike today, it will come with practice.
Dominic just missed out on an improvement from last year, you weren't too pi553d off were you Dom :?:
Good work there Keith on the road bike.
Andrew and Snoop, I thought the guy doing the leaderboard was a bit premature with writing winner next to Pete Tadros's time as your times still weren't up yet

Well George has raised the bar again. What a great ride!!

Mr Tadros' ride goes without saying.

MIne in hindsight was a bit of a cock up. Thought I was a lot fitter than I am and started too fast but felt good. It was only when I got to the draggy bits on the A29 and A24 that I realised how shagged by legs were.

Still managed to give my wife and her friend a warrior scream in Ockley which apparently made some old boy jump coming out of a shop.

The only consolation was that I was first man home :D

I was a little disheartened at the HQ for two reasons, one not improving my time and two having to leave to go to lunch in Wandsworth with my inlaws.

In reality though it was only 38 seconds slower that last year, my legs felt good for the most part and it is a cracking little course.

The racing season has began 8)

Well done all especially to Georgezilla.

I must say that I find the TT bike bike very restrictive and pretty sure im putting far less power down than my road bike. The tops of my legs get very sore as well. I guess I need to practice the position I suppose.

The results had me down as the same time as Dominic so I thought I would ask if I could look at the times and I was 46:25.5 compared to Dominic's 46:26.0. As they say, every half second counts.

Yes I was Marco  . I know I should have been concentrating on the race I was actually supposed to be doing at the time but as I rode through and overtook a few MTBers I did think back to that icy one and riding on the pond.
