Stronger drivechain.

Postby Alex S » Fri Mar 06, 2009 2:35 pm

Ok so im fed up of breaking chains. Someone recommend me a stronger one.

I had an Ultegra 10spd chain and It snapped powering up a hill, ok, granted, but I looked at the chain and it had about 6 other links that had similar cracks halfway across them. Oh sorry this was about a 3 month old chain, maybe 500 miles. Shimano = Fail.

I've snapped 3 SRAM £10 chains in a month before on a singlespeed, once the powerlink itself snapped, SRAM = Fail.

What to try next?

And while I'm here, I have so many problems with SINGLESPEED FREEWHEELS as well. anyone recommend me some that might actually last longer than 250 miles? I've tried:

Dicta (BMX brand - didnt last long.)
Shimano (I hated this one the most. constant clicking noise.)
GB Unbranded freewheel. (Actually I take it back, I hated this one the most)
and some other 12-15 quid freewheels, but not found any ones that I can get on with yet.

Any singlespeeders here? Care to share some knowledge?

Unless you're Tom Boonen in disguise then you've probably just had bad luck. I've used Ultegra chains on 3 seperate bikes, racking up over 15,000km and have never had any problems (although i suspect i will on the CR tomorrow now  )

All single speed freewheels are cr*p apart from White industries, only problem is you need deep pockets for these £69 or so :(

No offense but it probably is. 10 speed chains are so narrow and with such narrow plates that joining them has to be spot on or they can pull apart (I had one go on a hill too for this reason). As said you (or I) won't be breaking chains with our power.

Another vote for KMC. Very good chains, run and index smoothly, and the power link (or whatever they call theirs) makes fitting a doddle and always secure. Go for the normal X10 not the SL version. The SL just has drilled pins etc and costs a stupid amount of money for saving a pathetic amount of weight. Personally I'm not a fan of drilled chains anyway as I'd rather have the strength and haul that extra couple of grams about.

Freewheel :? fixed

Even assuming a cytech level 3 qualification isnt enough to fit a chain, it wouldnt explain the 6 other cracks in other links.

White industries. wow. they look amazing. I might have to splurge. anyone know any UK distributors?

I use a White Industries freewheel on my Condor Pista

(The one that came with the bike was cheap Shimano rubbish)

The WI freewheel is a beautiful piece of engineering and is very easy to service/maintain (all parts can be replaced)

The obvious downside is that they're not cheap - especially not with current £/$ exchange rates

Sideways Cycles are one of the main UK stockists

have fun - i've had mine (red) for ... well i can't remember exactly, but a long long time.

for the chain, i've had a sram (pc1 i think, the bmx one) for years too. with a quick link but the solid type (with one male and one female part), looks like this
