I Need Help Screwing Something

Postby Snoop Doug » Wed Mar 11, 2009 11:13 pm

Right - that's got yer attention.

So I have a carbon aero seat post fitted to a carbon frame. It has a do upness of 4NM apparently. I need a torque wrench or else. That's what Dauphins said anyhoo - they reckon if I overtighten it'll crack the frame. So what you may ask?? Well I've ridden this TT bike twice now and both times it's left me lower back very sore - quite a sharp specific pain. I think the saddle must be too high. I'm a bit worried if I let the bolts off then redoing them might be accompanied by a carbony cracky sound. So - here's the question (I should stress that I do of course take full responsibility for any action I take based on any advice I may or may not receive). If I undo the bolts and remember how many turns, can I redo by the same number of turns with any degree of confidence that the do upness factor of 4NM is unlikely to be breached?

Phew! Answers on a postcard to dimwit dungeons please

How does your saddle height on your TT bike compare to your road bike?

It could be just getting used to a new position. I haven't altered anything on mine and my back, shoulders and neck are stiff after racing just from not being used to it again.

Try a few training rides on your TT bike to get used to it perhaps?

I have a torque wrench* you can borrow if you like.

Let me know and I can bring it along on Saturday morning.

More details (ie torque range, and socket size) to follow when I get to dig it out of the toolbox tonight.

Get yourself one of these. I normally go to FT as a standard rule of thumb but if you want to be cautious with your carbon then just go to real tight.

Can someone point Brian at the Carrababy too.
Anyone got any experience of a realMAN saddle?

grrrrr

Well I got my measure out - what did I find.

Saddle on TT bike is a centimetre (maybe even 11mil) higher than road bike. And the TT bike has 172.5 cranks v 170 on the road bike. Reckon that's enough to put me in a world of pain eh wot?

I wish there was a local(ish) bike shop that paid as much attention to set up as helping to empty the old wallet.

Dough Diddly Oh Fans

And they had my road bike for some time to take measurements from it. Weirdly (or not so) when they saw the road bike they dissed the set up base on their visual inspection. They slowly drew back from this position once they saw me on it.

I dunno....maybe us cyclists are a bit too demanding, stuff that fits, stuff that's setp up properly, phone calls returned etc, eh adrian?

Different manufacturer, and different frame angles, not to mention the bar set ups. Would've been better measuring you to fit the bike you were buying. They should've notice what length cranks were on the bike too  .

To be fair they did do some of that too, measuring me on the new bike that is. They suggested longer cranks based on some of these measurements?? If this were just a little problem then I'd have let it go but I'm sitting here 6 days after the ride still in a lot of discomfort, nay, pain.

Caveat emptor and all that but this kinda thing does feel a bit, well, basic. I guess a little more attention on my part too wouldn't have gone amiss but I feel a bit like they should be doing the attending when I'm doind the shelling out.
