2009 Richmond Park 3 Lap Challenge

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

So considering I was doing 36.5km/h on the TTbike for 55 minutes on a hilly course could I expect to be managing 38 (or +/- 51 minutes) in Richmond or is that unlikely? Who else thinks it's silly (if done at 6-7am)?

If your gonna do it when there aren't many cars around, then its not so bad. But there is a section where it's possible to hold close to 70km/h for about 2km if you go flat out, it has been done in training this winter. So at that speed your theoretically going round the cars at twice their speed, which is dangerous... and silly!
Isn't there a 20mph speed limit in Richmond Park?
Jon stop being boring  I try and stress to people its just a bit of a training challenge and a fitness marker if you like. Anyone who takes big risks just to get a fast time is STUPID. A bit like drafting lorries and buses or careering down a fast hill etc
[/Yes, which is why this challenge thing is a touch silly, there's enough idiots riding around that park already.
 Blimey Adam lighten up dude. The original title of the thread which I started thread three years ago was something like "When its really quiet and there are hardly any cars around how fast can you safely do 3 laps around Richmond Park". Actually myself an another dude were suggesting to the Cyclosportiv Brigage that 3 laps in under an hour in Richmond Park was a good fitness marker. Now I hope someone really original  will point out the positive or negative effect of traffic, TT bikes, timing accuracy, wind etc

Sounds like a plan :D

The opening times for cars are detailed here
http://www.royalparks.org.uk/docs/richm ... hParkK.pdf

The pedestrian gates are always open (except I think during the rutting season) so you can get in and out whenever you want

Thanks Toks
I'm 61 Kg's and a 'duathlete' and a 'sportive' rider i guess :D
Oh and i was on the TT set up,although i do think using the disk there was fruitless as its quite hilly
I'm sure most of us cyclists break the speed limit on the roads sometimes along most car drivers
If you get there very early on a sunday the park is empty so its very safe
Chill.......

Well you know my views on Richmond Park Toks  . I have to agree about the 20mph speed limit and the racing round it element in what is a public park which also has animals roaming about. I know you may have said safely ride round but a challenge like this is always going to encourage some to take silly risks, and I don't think it puts cyclists in a particularly good light.

Anyway wot I rekon is...
the positive or negative effect of traffic, TT bikes, timing accuracy, wind etc

Don't really know the layout of the park or its terrain (i.e. how long/steep the hills are and where on the loop they are, how evenly spaced out etc) but in general.
Traffic - If it's slower than you it'll hold you up  . If it is faster than you then you get a benefit from it as you get sucked along. Impossible to put a figure on it as it would vary where it was (on a straight, a hill etc) and also the size and flow of the traffic. A steady flow = a good draight to drag you along, also equals more dangerous which is why some TT courses are now banned and you have to do traffic counts on courses to dictate when you can use them.
TT bikes = a benefit. Can't say how much as I don't know the course but you'll make up time anywhere you can use the tri-bars, basically anywhere apart from steeper hills or twisty stuff. Wheels etc add a bit more of an advantage, but the position is the main gain. Disc wheels used on sporting courses Carl as you can gain when not going up the hills but they're light (if they are any good) so don't slow you down going up.
Timing accuracy = If you don't do it accurately then it isn't accurate. Anyone cheating it must be mad though just to be able to boast about a fake time. I expect some will though.
Wind = Depends where it is. A loop won't even it out and unless it's a strong wind then a head wind on the hills will slow you down less as you're going slower and not pushing as hard against it. The aero TT bike benefit will work to a greater effect in to a head wind though so you'd need to take wind in to account alongside position.

Exactly.

Knowing Toks however, Andrew, He'll probably tell you to 'lighten up' also!

I'd just rather there wasn't a load of chippers racing aroung Richmond Park as though they were in the TdF final TT fighting it out for the maillot jaune, pissing off car drivers. I'm not saying everybody who does this challenge is like this. But from what I see on the rare occasion I venture over that way, that is the general standard of rider around there and thats without taking into account this 'challenge'.

Yeah, thats right, they remind me of this cocky young lad that I know who kept on riding into cars all the time. I mean, who would believe it, last I heard he wrote off his training bike just before the start of the season. Cuh, I don't know, irresponsible idjuts.

Cheers
