Rye & Back...is back! - 2nd May

Postby Andrew G » Thu Mar 19, 2009 9:29 pm

When: Saturday 2nd May (Bank Holiday Weekend).
Where: 9am at GBs (prompt departure).
Distance: circa 150 miles.
Duration: 9 hours-ish (bring some lights as you will probably need them towards the end to get home safely).
Terrain: Very rolling (my Garmin watch said 4,900 metres of climbing last time!).
Pace: Steady. This is a very long, tough ride and is about endurance. Speed will not be that slow but neither will it be a race.
Minimum ability needed: Strong 18s rider - you must be happy doing a ride of this length in both distance and duration, and it is not flat. We'll briefly regroup at the top of any climbs that split us but will not be waiting on people who just can't keep up as we will need to keep moving or we'll be out all night.
Lunch stop: Hopefully the same Italian in Rye, although probably a slightly shorter stop to get back a bit earlier as it will get darker than when we went in July last year.
Route: I'll sort out a copy of an OS with the route highlighted on it and post it up. I'd recommend that you bring a copy with you in case you get lost or need to turn back. There is the potential to get lost so it may vary slightly but last time it was great so I'm going to try for the same. E.g. We got did a little loop around the Darwell Reservoir (see the googlemap link below) which added a few miles on last time when we missed a turn but it was a very nice getting lost.

Route profile:Here.
I must admit I hate things like this as I can't take 9 hours off for this, it's not fair

well you need to be doing the brighton night runs then. :) no need to take any time off.

Getting dropped and having to look after yourself? No probs - I face this hazard all the time! Suggestion - post some ideas of train stations and approx times to aid a quick return for anyone faltering. There you are, Sean, you've got no real excuse ...

Sean it's on this day as I want to do a few miles over Easter as I have a free weekend. Later in the year I have a number of 100s and 50s so may not have the opportunity in Summer. That's not to say I won't be going to Rye again should a weekend free itself up :D .

Mark I'll keep it as 9 as already stated but it will be a prompt departure so we'll be leaving at 9, not 9.15-9.30am. Darkness isn't a problem if you strap a light to your handlebars  . It would only be for the last bit anyway when we'll be back on lit roads, just letting people know so they don't have to do the last few miles home in the dark without lights.

Once I put up a copy of the rough route please do print it off if you intend to come though as it will be a self-sufficient ride to a degree.

Okay with a bit of luck this will work :| . Click on the small image below and then when it opens in photobucket click on it again - the cursor should change to a magnifying glass when over the image. Then once it has opened full size save to your desktop so you can then open it and print it off with whatever photo viewer/software is on your machine. The route is anti-clockwise.

I've tried to do it this way so that you can print off an A4 copy of the map so it's readable, but not clog up forum space as it's a 1mb jpg file.

If you have any problems then pm me your email address and I'll send you a copy of the jpg that way, but hopefully the above will work and it's not difficult.

If you're coming please do print it out as it will be worth having for a "just in case". The map picks the route up (and returns you to) Limpsfield Chart just south of the A25 by Titsey Hill or Botley Hill.

Cheers,

Andrew.

I'll def be up up for this little jaunt especially as I'll miss the the Avanti one on the 5th, Ryes there Brighton if you see what I mean, as I'll be in sunny Majorca. Also as Mr Locke said we could start a hour earlier to avoid the dark.

1) I get up early for work every week day and get up very early for races on a lot of weekends, so I don't want another early call if it's not needed.
2) Lights may only be needed for the last half hour or so once on lit roads to get you home depending where you have to get to so not hours of country lanes in the dark.
3) It's not exactly pitch black at 7ish now.
4) We'll be in BST with lighter nights.

So it is a 9am start.

Blimey are you lot afraid of the dark of something, do you want me to come and check your cupboards for monsters now  .

Hey Sean,
Ther's a great cafe in Tunbridge Wells where you can get a full English and wash it down with some lager :D

Andrew,
I can't make this one, but I will be leading a similar ride on Easter Monday to Bognor Regis (via Horsham!!). Post to follow.
