Insurance

who does everyone use for their bike insurance? (if any) got my renewal through from BCinsurance and it seems to have gone up rather a lot. Had a quick hunt around for alternatives, but all the ones I found were just redirecting to the same site as the british cycling insurance one(jltgroup).

I've said it before and I'll say it again, CTC. It doesn't cover racing, but any cover that does will be very expensive, but it is extremely comprehensive.

This thread has been around before....

I have all my bikes insured whilst at home (i.e.indoors) on my house contents policy for a very modest premium, but the silly amount quoted for racing etc (approx 1/3 cost of the bike) means that I can "self insure" by investing the premium each year myself and then buying a new one every 3 years.

No article limit on "indoor cover" with Prudential, providing it is in the house. NB does not include garage/shed etc

Marks and Spencer will cover unlisted items (ie you don't have to tell them what each thing is, unless you need to claim) up to £3k each. For a (smallish) increase in premium, the cover can be extended worldwide. So my mountainbike is covered when I'm guiding on it in Colorado.

I would never suggest reporting a bike theft some time later after gaining insurance, now that would be naughty

CTC dont cover theft or damage to your own bike.

I always thought Evans was quite reasonably priced, with no excess which is nice.

You can ask for the limit to be raised on your home insurance Sean, the premium will just be altered accordingly.

Also if you only want the bike to be covered when it is in the house and not when you are out on it then it doesn't have to be clasified as a bike and can go under the large individual item limit (normally in place for jewellery, laptops etc) which is normally higher. The bike is then just an object in the house under the same criteria as your sofa, but it would have to be in the house not a garage/shed.

These work fine if you only want cover against theft from the house but won't cover you when you are out on the bike or if it's nicked when you lock it up at the shops/work.

Yes they do.
I use the CTC as it covers the bike anywhere - including 90 day green card cover for use abroad, and when you've left it somewhere so long as it was locked to an immovable object. They even cover if you are camping so long as the bike is in the tent or locked to a tree or railing etc. They also cover accidental damage so that if you come off on ice in winter for example (or on a gravelly bend on holiday in Italy  ) and damage the bike then you can get it all fixed up under the insurance. For accidental damage there is an excess of about 10% I think.

Roughly how much is the premium, as a %age of bike replacement value?

10% generally.
I've gone with the BC insurance again, it was actually cheaper than the CTC quote I got.

I've used Butterworths the last couple of years. 10% of replacement value. You get 10% no-claims discount.

I second the vote for M&S, I changed from Zurich to M&S last year, smart move.

I've just received my renewal quote from Butterworths who I have been with for 4 or 5 years and had a shock.
However I've just done and online quote with BC and the premium is the same.

Their maximum cover is a total of £5000 which isn't really much use if you have 1 race bike and 1 decent training bike.

Has anyone come across any other cycling specifc insurers?

Think I'm going to have to put the older bikes on the house policy.

don't bother with insurance
the money you save will easily pay for new bikes over a few years
chances are your bike wont be stolen anyway
be paranoid about your bike security
spend money on decent locks and security
don't leave your bike in a vulnerable position
learn from mistakes
wear sunscreen
