Tour of the Dengie Marshes

Postby George » Sun Mar 29, 2009 9:33 pm

Wow what a super event, this ones a pan flat course mostly on small farm roads with a couple of unmade sections and one real rutted muddy hole part which was great, 120km so 3 hours of hardcore slog on this exposed part of Essex.

Started off right up the front as I wanted to be one of the first onto the dodgy sections of track, 5 miles on a nice little road then sharp right onto the farm tracks with some big potholes on the corner, Kevin Knox from Dulwich unfortunately puntured.

The pace was hot and I was rotating on the front with the fast boyz then 3/4 the way round we snuck through a farm and onto the infamous off road section here I really thrived and came out the other side in 4th position, here the pace really went up and the peloton was split I was in a lead group of around 10 riders with the likes of Warrick Spence Billy Joe Whenman, Darren Barclay and Jody Crawforth. I was holding my own but finding I really had to power the cranks to keep in this group.

Everytime we hit that really bad section a couple more riders would either have mechanicals or crash out, to me it seemed fine, and loads of spectators were cheering us on which really helped get the most out of yourself and push even harder. This muddy track split the pack and as a few riders struggled to ride through the muddy ruts.
I saw a few of Adams mates in Orange but couldnt see him, then out of the blue Adam popped up in the lead group with a few more riders after they had chased their way back from the mud.

We started through and offing and as I came to the front then a rider came past me and shouted at me to come round, I thought that some of the others should take their turn, so I quickly glanced round and realized we had a 100m gap on the lead group. So we worked together for a few miles but were slowly reeled back in.

Back in the group and the pace was relentless I was beginning to feel the heat and found myself at the back of the group, this was about mid race and I was struggling to hold wheels, A couple of riders had attacked and the speed was fast. I was sprinting to get back on but it was taking so much out of me that I fell off the lead group.

After what seemed like almost a lap by myself, I teamed up with another dropped rider and we worked together then we caught Adam who had also been dropped from the group. Then after a while the 3 of us were joined by Marcus and in tow was the second bunch on the road.

We through and offed but my legs were feeling it and I was suffering with the work and dropped back further, a lap later caught by the 3rd group on the road with 2 laps to go I was toast and pulled over as I didn't fancy riding the remaining 2 laps on my own.

Still enjoyed myself, had a good kicking, which I'm sure is character building stuff and look forward to riding this great event next year, although I wouldn't fancy earning a living riding at that pace I can tell ya'll :D :D

Re: Tour of the Dengie Marshes

Postby -Adam- » Mon Mar 30, 2009 12:22 am

Well, that was a pretty tough affair out there this afternoon...

Our day started a little less relaxed than normal due to riding the entire course as warm up then only getting to the sign on with about 3 mins to spare! Well warmed up we were, though.

The race itself started pretty hot, as George said. Single lane roads, we were gutter to gutter at very high speed, but today I was comfortable with this and held my own up in the top 15 or so. Was there or there abouts when the race started to string out, although unfortunately the immediate big break I was hoping for, for smooth passage through the mud, didn't really ever happen. As a result, there must have been a good 50 or so riders fighting for position for the opening passage of the farm track. So, first time across it and someone crashes barely a few bikes ahead. In front of me everyone panics and stops, c'mon people, please... ride on. So I was held up inititally, but had a good few riders to draught to get me back to the front. Credit to George, despite his slightly gungho style annoying just a few, his cyclo-cross skills served him well in getting him across the mud with the front few riders.

Next time across, another muppet decides to take a mud bath. Result, I'm forced to a halt again, and more needless chasing ensued. Made it back though.

3rd time across, another crash, this time right in front of me. I'm forced into a row of brambles, and nearly ended up right in them. Luckily avoided that, but when I detangled, I had a big gap to close. Ahead of me were 3 groups of 5/6 riders. George, I believe, was behind me at this point. I guess cyclo-cross races don't last so long huh. The road after the farm track was the hardest section in terms of the wind, so I had pretty much no chance of getting back to them. So I spent the best part of a lap and a half pretty much on my own. Not without mishap I might add, on one of the sections across a farm yard, I hit a hole pretty hard and my left shifter slid down about 2cm. So my left hand was now resting á la Sean Yates stylee, while my right was normal... not good!

4th time across the mud... I'm going solo... So I threw caution to the wind, and flew across the mud. I nearly lost it towards the end, but saved it, to the delight of the gathering crowds. After Belgium last week, I'm getting used to having a good old crowd watching. Shortly after I noticed George and a rather energetic junior coming back up to me. After some comment about a 'boy wonder', I let the two of them tow me along while what was left of the bunch came up behind me. There were now 3 laps to go.

I'm not gonna lie, at this point I was pretty cooked. So before I did a 'Contador' and slid off the back of the bunch, I enjoyed some refreshments. I then decided relaxing at the back of the bunch was the order of the day for now, there were only about 25 riders or so, and nothing looking like moving off the front.

5th time across the mud, sat at the back of the gruppetto, watched with amusement the fools falling off in front of me, but not held up this time. Exited the mud section safely on the back of the bunch. Another lap of wallowing at the back, although by now I was picking myself up of the floor and contemplating how I was gonna be the first of this bunch over the line, for a hopeful top-20.

6th crossing of the mud, see No. 5. By now I was moving up, I was not gonna leave this race empty handed.

7th & Final crossing of the muddy stuff... Hit the dirt with Marcus and a couple of others for company. As we got off the mud we had a good gap on the next few riders. As we came together 7 of us pulled clear of a rapidly disintegrating peloton. Off we went, with the token sit in sprinter on the back (No not me, James Jackson, PCA Ciclos Uno). The group, although now well clear of any chasers, was not working all that well. As we got onto the homeward section it was time for a shake up. Marcus attacked with one other, and was shortly followed by another, Phil Jones of Dulwich. I waited a moment as at this point, I was on the back of the bunch... I decided I had to go, so I jumped the other three, and got a gap. But they came back up to me, minus one guy. They then rode past me, but were not getting anywhere in chasing. I was not willing to work with them as they were the two sitting on prior. So I jumped the lazy bastards in true counter attacking style, and blew them away. But I was too late, the two ahead had become three, and were working like a train. So I had to be content to hold off the two behind me, which I did. Crossed the line a good 30 s clear of them, contrary to the result timing. If I was capable of that, I was capable of beating Marcus for that 18th spot. As it was, I missed the boat, so fair play to him and the other two. That's racing.

Not all that pleased with the result, but on balance, considering I have had a rough week training and felt off my best today, it's ok. It was a pretty epic race though, well worth a ride next year... if you think your hard enough. Fair play to George for lasting so long, you'd have been credited with a bunch finish had you continued by the looks of it. Must be a big step up from a Surrey League 3rd cat race though huh. Was looking forward to you kicking 1st cat butt, but it never seemed to materialise? Never mind.

Eagerly awaiting the photographic evidence of all this now, they will show you the true pain that was, The Dengie Marshes Tour - Hell of the East, 2009.

Oh, and the most impressive ride of the day? Apart from the ease at which National Cyclo-Cross Champion Jody Crawforth, and Pro-MTBer Billy Joe Whenman navigated their way across the mud... my mate David Barnes of the East London Vélo, barely two years ago we rode to Paris together, and he was rubbish! Now, he's a decent looking second cat, who can really mix it with the big boys... Fair play!

Hey George, I was just thinking, wouldn't it have been comical to see Paul ride across that farm track!!?

Mind you, the state his bike is usually in, maybe he rides across it all the time??

Can't wait to see the pictures as well. I hadn't appreciated just how "hellish" this event was going to be. Well done Adam, George & Marcus, especially if you're not coming to it after a winter of CX.

Hey Adam great work, with a bit more luck who knows. Given your situation you rode a smart race though...Chapeau to David Barnes he's really come on since last summer. He could never get near the breaks in last years 3/4 races at Hog Hill. Six months on and he's kicking butt :D

Great reports from George and Adam, and good strong rides by you both by the sounds of it. Adam, maybe George didn't quite kick 1st cat butt in the end, but mixing it for a few laps with some top national level riders ain't too bad huh?

But yeah it's all about being able to sustain that same high pace in the end I guess. That Mtb race I did yesterday, that first lap was soo fast, I couldn't keep it up with the front group more than two laps, and my following two laps were 2 minutes slower each - if I could maintain that same pace for the whole race (which the Elites do) I would be racing amongst them.

Anyway - that sounds like a race I'd want to do next time (I've seen the photos!)

That was a really good race to watch. As I was in the same county for my TT in the morning, I popped over there in the afternoon. Spotted the big red van in the car park and said hello to George before the race. Adam was in the midst of getting his team orders from his gaffer, so I didn't get chance to say hello to him.

As the race rolled out onto the course I went t'other way to the start of the farm track. As they came onto there for the first time there was a break of two, then two chasers, then the main group with George as 4th man and looking good. Already there was a split in the bunch and the second half almost overshot the turning and missed the farm track. The farm track here was well surfaced, and I was told the other end was better (i.e. muddier), so I headed round to there.

Picked a good spot to spectate alongside John M of Londoncyclesport.com, right by the muddiest roughest bit of track. Hung around there for a few laps; some riders just seemed to confidently float across the rough stuff, some looked very timid, and some just made a hash of it and ended up in a heap. On about lap 4 or 5 one guy was sitting in the mud shouting "dislocated shoulder", and the following car got held up. George came charging up behind it, rode up onto the grass/mud bank, back down across the broken bricks and away; impressive bit of bike handling.

Spotted Adam a few times in the bunch. First time I saw him was on the muddy track and he looked like he was overgeared and struggling, but that was possibly one of the occasions he'd been held up. The rest of the time looked much better, and was looking good along with Marcus in the main bunch towards the end.

Oh yes, it happened alright...

This was one of the few times I had a good run across the mud, although I think it is later on than my solo effort.

George... while he was at the sharp end by the looks of things.

You know your in trouble when this is the service vehicle!

This is what it was all about...

You see it wasn't the mud that was the problem, it was the incapable riders who kept panicking everytime they got to it... There's a faint bit of orange behind that pile up in the background, thats probably me being held up... again!

Awesome pictures from John at LCS... which by the way, has just launched its new website this evening, very nice it is too.
