SL ACC Bletchingley Event.....Any News?

Postby Tony » Sat Apr 04, 2009 6:19 pm

So folks, who won?

My favourite for the race would have been Rob Hurd....but the start sheet on SL Website suggests he hasn't entered, so that would be a damn impressive result had he won. Maybe Steve Calland is favourite? Interesting to see how Richard Prebble gets on too - but not sure I know enough about him to give a sensible comment on his likely performance.

I predict a respectable performance by Team ACC - maybe one rider around 6th or so and another in the points too. I don't think a podium is that likely today for ACC, but would happily be proved wrong.

Hopefully, a safe, clean-race, free of horse incidents and snobby Surrey people in their 4x4s having a moan as they've been delayed by at least 30s from their very important business. My slight worry is that when the less experienced riders (e.g. 3rd Cats and inexperienced racers) get a bit excitable on the Bletchingley circuit, it can be a bit of crash-fest. There were multiple ambulances required to the SL Jaunts in 2002(?) on this circuit - almsot all due to dodgy riding. Hopefully today went off well in the lovely spring sunshine.

Almost written like you were there Tony...

Paragon tore the race apart as predicted, Steve Calland taking the honours from the break. Prebble 2nd.

Sylv made the move, came home in 8th. Top ride, why he worked in the break containing 5 Paragons though, I shall never know.

George was the first of a disintegrated bunch, 15th. A few snuck ahead from him though, Including John Saddler.

And yes, there was a crash.

Meanwhile, I was spectating at the side with a pint, getting a sun tan... Lovely.

Good race all round.

Nice one Tony! Sorry I couldn't quite make it to 6th

[quote="-Adam-"]Sylv made the move, came home in 8th. Top ride, why he worked in the break containing 5 Paragons though, I shall never know.

We through-and-offed pretty much the whole way to get a 2+ min gap, what would you have done - hide at the back? It was only on the climbs, when the pace eased off a bit, and I always seemed to find myself at or near the front at the top without working too hard, so I was happy to take a long turn at the front down the hill where you were standing and wait for the rest to come through.

Was feeling comfortable with the pace until the start of the last lap, when one Paragon and another guy attacked, later joined by a Dulwich I think (very strong came 3rd, the lone Dynamo in the break was also very strong and attacked a few times). Then obviously the other Paragons stopped working and it got a whole lot harder, at one point there were only two of us taking turns, we were getting close to them but not quite, then riders jumped away to bridge and I killed myself trying to go with them. It all got back together at the gravelly corner, but by then I was getting early signs of cramps (I was planning to take a second gel but didn't really get a chance) and was getting worried about the last climb, I didn't have much left at that point when the final attacks started, and rolled in in 8th with a good gap on followers but also a good gap ahead of me.

Cheers to all the ACC who came to help and cheer us on, well done to the Paragons

Just to add from what I heard he didn't run into the car but clipped the wing mirror, and smashed his face on the ground.

Don't get me wrong Sylv, your ride was class. You've obviously improved a lot this winter. I just think that if in a break of 15ish riders, and you have 5 riders from one team, once the gap is established, which it was the time I'm referring to you being on the front, I would have sat on. Easy to say, sat here, but Marcus said you rode harder than he would have opted to also. But like I say, just to make that break was good.

What happened to big George?

Seemed to be a very exciting race from my view in the lead car. Sylv was looking strong and doing his fair share of work which I think you should do in a break if you have any respect for yourself and do not want to get a reputation. With 3 very strong Paragon riders in the break it was always going to be a tall order for anybody else to win and the last lap saw numerous strong attacks and an impressive win.

Thats fine if you don't want to win a race, ever. All the riders in that break knew what was what, the only reputation you'd have gained amongst them was respect for showing savvy.

Well ok then probably
But like I said I wasn't killing myself and was looking forward to a strong finish up the hill, just had to work too hard on the last lap and it didn't happen, maybe it would have turned out otherwise if I hadn't (or if we'd had 2-3 more riders)

What fun that was :P Thanks to all the helpers for making a good day out.

Yoda says, "Everyone starts the race with a full glass of energy, it's up to you how and when you use it  But make sure when you do it counts"

A thought, "Even sitting at the front of the break ride steady is more energy sapping that sitting on a wheel"

If Sylv sat in all the way and won the race, I doubt many will be respecting his savvy.

George got a few compliments from some of the top riders at Dengies Marsh for working at the front which I would prefer to a minor placing. Make sure you take more food and drink next time George.

Everyone to themselves though I guess as long as it doesnt break the rules. Id rather be a Voigt than a Hincapie.

May the force be with you.

Well, like I said, all the riders knew whats what. If Sylv had sat in and won, they would have only had themselves to blame.

Interesting take on Dengie, perhaps if you had ridden you would be in more of a position to discuss it.

Voigt and Hincapie... not sure what your point is on those two, that said, your very comparison of yourself to either will at least keep me smiling through the final two months of educational purgatory I have ahead of me...

Weather conditions - fan bloody tastic 8)

Course, tight, lots of potential for danger but thankfully v little came to pass 8)

Signage, support, marshalling, helping. First class well done y'all. Seriously, well done. I saw lots of smiles out and about - y'see, being a member of this club and contributing to a success is a great thing, told ya, more please. There were a lot of committee members out doing there bit too, visible leadership is important. 8) 8) 8)

Road sweepage, off the scale 8)

Adam's sunglasses - v cool 8)

Hospital duties, impeccable 8)

1/2 pint of ale @ pub, tipperty top 8)

Atmosphere - v v good, 'cept for the three amigo knobheads in the Land Rover  hey ho their loss

Race - exciting. Well done to the Paragon who executed perfectly. Great work from team ACC in their home event. Sylv, you da man yesterday. Great to see the yellow n black up there all the way. Well done too George and Hal. Looked extremely hard work.

Most importantly, the race was great fun, at least for everyone not riding it

Cheers - Snoop

Wow! Paul and Adam are duking it out on racing thread once again  :D Should you or can you be honorable while going for honours? Hmmm...last year I manage to rack up a dissapointingly modest 45 points despite being (my opinion) one of the strongest 3rd cats in the 10-12 races I did from July onwards. On reflection I wish I would've been a little bit more cunning since the results don't have an addendum which points out that Toks did most of the work to establish the break, chase down attacks etc in the following races.

The strongest man wins event is called Time Trailling. Road Racing is beautiful in my opinion cause it reflects life - you will eventually be rewarded for hard work but there are some lucky so and so's who do quite well without seemingly doing a great deal - Sprinters, Premiership Footballers and Reality TV Celebs

Its hard though because we tend to be creatures of habit. I'll often flog my self silly in early season races just to get my fitness levels up and yes occassionally I'll do it when I should be racing smarter. By then some people have already got half of the poiints they need for a season. I'm learning though and practice might not make perfect but it does bring about prudence.

Sylv probably felt fine in the break hence he didn't start missing turns; but you don't truly know what you have left (See Dave K's point) until some bugger in the break presses the MORE WATTS NOW! button with a few K's to go. If Sylv sat in a bit more perhaps he would've been 4th rather than 8th? But then apart from an increased points tally (money) does it really matter since a win is a win and 2nd is nowhere. You can keep all your 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths etc and give me a win everytime even if its only once in a season. Sylv your time will come mate - probably in a race where you've had to be a little bit dishonorable  8) :D
