No need to sniff at padded bags Sean they do the job perfectly well, and are also lighter than boxes. Careful with your weight as you may have to pay excess for a box, best to check with the airline.
In general I think padded bags are fine, I just pipe lag the frame & chainring and remove the pedals, rear mech (tape between chain stays in a sandwich bag) and bars (tape to top tube), and you are unlucky should the handlers do anything to it. If they aren't too huge (unlike the Planet X hernia special) and have some wheels and useful padded handles then they load them safely. If they can pick it up easily enough then they will. For Mallorca I used my B-Twin one and had all my cycling clothes and the various tools in it and it was only 22kgs when easyjet weighed it and easy enough for me to lift and move about on to the conveyor and I'm a weakling.
