Catford CC 10

Postby Andrew G » Sat Apr 25, 2009 11:46 am

Ah today was the one and only race this year on the infamous Q10/19 (Tonbridge Bypass). To be honest I think some of its prior infamy has wained over the years as the road surface is a bit bumpy in a couple of places (although not exactly Surrey lanes) and they are only allowed early starts on it, in the past you could run evening 10s on it and have glorious warm summer float evenings. The drag up the slip road to the turn is a bit of a slog too, but that said it's still one of the fastest courses in the South East with a gift start. Today there was a bit of a breeze but it was a head wind return which I prefer as on something as short as a 10 my legs are going better on the return leg.

I was looking forward to this one and first winner of the day was Jon. The race was also marked as one of Ian Cammish's Old School Series and Jon was a star riding his old steel Holdsworth fixed wheel bike :D .

Just as I was about to warm up it started raining :( , so I hid in the bike shed (didn't have a crafty fag though) and fortunately it eased off about 20 minutes before I was due to start. Grabbed the pointy hat and set off.

5,4,3,2,1, Go! Off I went and down the slip road to the A21, flicked it up to 53x11 and gave it some clocking a top speed of 48mph. All to soon it ends and then along the flat before a slight rise just after halfway to the turn. I was really tuned in today and just kept pushing, so it was a bit of a surprise when my minute man (and seeded rider) came by after 8 minutes  .

Gave Jon a little wave as we passed each other on opposite sides of the road, and then up the slip road to the turn. Back down t'other side and push for home. Again I seemed to be getting the pedals spinning in a pretty big gear quite well. My legs were hurting but in the good way when your really hammering along. A bit of gurning with the effort but managed to keep it looking more normal for Mike and his camera, nice shout from Mike and on I went for the finish.

The finish is a bit deceptive as it's just after a layby, but there's an identical layby a bit earlier on the road which fools you a bit - or me anyway. Very slight rise to the flag and I knew I'd done a good ride so made sure I bellowed my number loud for the timekeeper.

Good news, I'm now a member of the 25mph club with my time of 23.22

Oh for a warm still day to ride this course but delighted with my time and the ride was probably the best 10s I've done as I was really focused for it today.

My legs felt a bit fatigued on the climb up to the turn roundabout, think this is due to commuting yesterday when I should have rested after the 50 mile commute and 45 minute swim on thursday, so I expect to go about as fast as an old man with rickets tomorrow...but I don't care now :P .

The bloke who caught me so early (I caught no-one and no-one else caught me) won with 20.22 which would explain things.

Addiscombe:
Robert Royle-Evatt 24.01
George Brent 22.24
Dominic Lowe 22.44
Mark McLaughlin 22.36 (new PB from Mr. Fine Wine)
Jonathan Hemming 24.55 (5th in Old School Series and riding fixed)
Andrew Green 23.22

That has to be the longest report on a 10  .

I rode a bit earlier than Andrew and it was completely dry and started spitting just after I crossed the finish line, now thats good timing:wink:

Funniest moment was when Preston from Wigmore CC turned up late for his start time, he just thought stuff it and went home, I don't think he liked it when I said Plymouth your late

Straight after the ride I was happy, didn't check my time straight away but convinced myself I'd done a 21, as it didn't feel too slow.

In the HQ saw I had done a mid 22 and was a bit shell shocked, maybe I still hadn't woken up yet.

Top ride by by Mark McLaughlin just 12 seconds off my time and he just pipped Dom too, who's recovering from his surgery.
Andrew, very decent time indeed in those conditions and well done on the PB.

That was an interesting experiment this morning. I'd have ridden this event anyway, but when I saw it was part of the Planet-X Old Skool series it gave me a dilema - should I or shouldn't I go retro? I'd stuck a bigger gear onto the Holdsworth (circa 1970 vintage); went for 53x15 (94") which I figured was OK for normal TT speeds, and decided yesterday afternoon to go for it. So out came the retro ACC jersey, and the pointy hat stayed at home.

Had a shufty around the car park, and most other Old Skool bikes seemed to have gears. Hmmm, maybe this fixed wheel idea wasn't the best. Too late now though, as that's the only bike I had with me.

Started raining as I was getting ready, but by the time I'd struggled up the hill to the start it had stopped and was drying off again. So, away from the start and down the ski slope. This was the bit that was worrying me most, as I know it's easy to do 45mph+ down there. Not today though; it started getting very spinny at about 37, and the handling got a bit lively too, so I backed off and feathered the brake a bit. The rest of the way the gear was just about right; I was able to keep on top of it on the drags and spin it on the fast bits. My minute man caught me at about 7 miles, then broke his chain at about 7-1/4 miles; obviously good mechanics these London Dynamo fellas. Dean Lubin then caught me for 4 minutes just before the line, which didn't surprise me.

Quite pleased with dipping under 25 minutes, and 5th Old Skool should get me a prize too - probably a voucher to spend on Planet-X goodies. Looking forward to the photos.

Just started to rain a bit as I set off ! Down the slip road woah ..hitting 44mph! freewheeled a bit as I wasn’t too comfortable trying the disc for the first time !
Agree with Andrew about the surface, think our Rusper 10 is in better nick.
That seemed hard work to be honest, legs felt ok but plenty of drags to test you, dug deep to the finish which was painfully hidden round the next layby!
More happy when I got back to see my time of 22.36 a PB also for me and beat my Lifetime 10 of 22.51 back in 1979 (old school of course)
Well done Andrew- job done.. and to Jon taking up the Old School challenge.
Great rides from George and Dom, pretty pleased to be up there with you boys today!!

Not much to add really. Going to the turn was hard work but being off 56 I was a bit surprised to catch 111 just before the turn? I was surprised that the turn came so quickly as I didn't think I was going that well. It was a big old slog up to the roundabout. Got a shout from somebody there, don't know who? Coming back from the roundabout it was like hitting the warp factor and I was churning 53 x 12 along for about the first two miles from the turn. This is where my lack of fitness/strength hit home as I just had to change down for the slight drags and was forcing myself to turn 53 x 14 for the last mile. I had number 53 in my sights by now and was holding back a little as I wasn't sure where the finish was. Round the corner, saw finish, one last push past no 53 and finish.

Was pleased with my ride and time but I have never seen a results board with some many 22s on it. Like Andrew I would love a crack on that course on a good day.

Good ride from all the Agreeables and a very pleasant journey to and from the event with George.

Roll on tomorrow!!
and Mr Fine Wine (dunno either but it sounds cool).

He just keeps getting better with age  .

Nice pics, particularly the tweaks on the old school ones. Has to be said there were some very nice retro bikes there today, a classic diamond frame with chromed forks just looks so classy.

Quality grimacing George, and Rob T what were you thinking of to be pulling that face  :P .
