CR 25th April 09

Postby Keith » Sat Apr 25, 2009 5:06 pm

A bit of a change for most of the Training Group today - we did Marek's Hillyish ride.

8 riders and a string of mechanicals over the first few miles; 1 puncture and 2 chains falling off (the same rider  ). He has what would appear to be some sub-standard running gear, began with a "C" and ended with an "o", with some swirly writing inbetween ;-) .

Great secnery, some quiet roads and plently of hills: Turners Hill, Vowels Lane, up into Ashdown Forest, Kidd's Lane (the Wall) and then lots of ups and downs back to our place, where Stu set about demolishing a mountain of toast, cake and freshly made potato cakes. Sorry Sylv, there weren't any left.

Jumped on to the back of Graham's orderly 18's which was averaging around 16.5 when I joined shortly after the M23/A23 split. A few strange looks at my "lovely" mountain bike   but that was to be expected. It was nice to ride and catch up with a few peeps I haven't seen in a while. We picked up Sean just outside Reigate -he'd been smartly dispatched by a 19s/20's group. But sadly we lost Graham to a puncture, he was happy to do the billy-no-mates thing so we soldiered on. The pulls at the front got a little longer and a little stronger which naturally brought up the average...With around 30 mins to the end of the ride, the rather sprightly, Sean Hogan attacked the group which cause a temporary spilit. With ego's in check we eventually eased up to keep the group together and then had a fast run it for the Charlwood sprint. As per usual I had know idea that it was coming up so left it to the others to duke out. A great birthday ride :D :D :D thanks to everyone I spoke to and didn't speak to. The best bit was Graham's American Crit story - 8) 8)

Happy Birthday Ride Toks 8)

I also took the MTB heavy duty tank option. Stupidly (well whaddya gonna do), I joined up with Lord Ingram's hilly ride. I hoofed and scoofed as best I could but it was always gonna be tough keeping up. And how. Still I got some A grade bikefit advice form my fellow hillies free of charge. The race course at Epsom looked wonderful when I eventually honked along past it. Shortly after, I turned and headed back. I had a quality hour and a half plus at full on crazy legs pedal pace which I enjoyed very much. Mebbe I shoulda hung with you today dude, did you have birthday cake, mmmmm 8)

Good job folks - keep that yellow and black flag flyin!

Well, that was fun. On the way up to CSS I popped around my mates house, Chris to pick him up. Last time he came out with us we dropped him on the drag out of CSS as he had a puncture and we did not realise. As we left Lingfield there was a big bang. Oh no, Chris got a puncture. He then realised he had no tube and no pump, great, so I dutifully gave up one of mine and sorted his tyre. This now meant we were going to be late to CSS, so when we got to Merstham phoned up Keith and before long a tidy group came pootling down to Merstham to meet us.

Into the lanes and then all of a sudden out of nowhere Hal pops up, he was very out of breath, had chased the group from CSS. First climb was the Church climb which we got up very tidily. I was worried about my mate Chris as he is not as quick as most of the group so I was trying to look after him. The pace was reasonable, but now and then you could almost see the red mist descending with Stu and Keith duking it out a bit on the flats and Rob W flying up the hills with Stu. We got joined by a couple of London Dynamo riders, but then Rob W punctured. This gave me a chance to try to fix my front mech which was misaligned, I did a pretty bad job but it was better than what it was.

Sylv was keeping his powder dry for tomorrows time trial although once we reached Turners Hill he was looking decidedly dodgy and indicated he was not feeling too good. So we decided to up the pace a bit. :D

Nice descent from Turners Hill to the bottom of Vowels Lane, which is closed at the moment, but we climbed up it anyway and bunny hopped the 3 foot hole in the middle of the road. This is where we lost Sylv, he decided to turn back. Into West Hoathly and Hal turned off to go for a solo ride to Brighton. We descended down to Weirwood Reservoir and the weather was now brightening up. Then a long climb up to the top of the forest to get to Wych Cross. Unfortunately I punctured here and took me another 10 mins to fix. That was both my tubes gone then. :(

Then the fast long descent from Wych Cross to the bottom of Kidds Hill (the Wall). Stu got up first with Rob W in hot pursuit. Keith was next and Chris and I duked it out a bit, but I managed to just about pip him. We were greeted at the top by a fantastic view of the Forest, the heather is in yellow bloom at the moment and looks great. Into Hartfield where Rob W was worried about hitting some Pooh, then we cycled over to Edenbridge with another few draggy climbs which were fun. Tried to duke it out with Stu on one of them but could not get rid of the blighter.

Chris and I then re-grouped as the pace had got a bit hot along the Edenbridge road and we cycled back to Lingfield with Keith and the others heading over to Hurst Green. Got home with 100.5km on the clock. Really enjoyed the ride as had been expecting lots of rain considering it was peeing it down when I left at 8am his morning.

Will defo try to do more of these types of rides when I am not racing as the scenery and terrain is sooooo much better than doing the standard club run route.

Cheers

That was my worst day on the bike in a long long while, I rode home slowly and got a bit lost near Crawley (you don't want to see the GPS map), which made it 112km. If I'd had a map I would have tried to find Hurst Green, but I just wanted to stick to main roads really. Stu are you man or mouse, or human hoover rather. Got home and had to lie down for half an hour without even taking my bike clothes off. Then went on to sleep for 3 hours. This bodes well for tomorrow's time trial :?

Yikes, if I'd have know what kind of shape you were in we could have taken a detour to my place and we could have left you there. Am sure my misses would have knocked you up some soup or something. Hope you feel better tomorrow, maybe you are coming down with something, might be better to take the day off tomorrow if your not feeling 100% in the morning.

Cheers

well i had an eventful right down to CSS, after surviving an attempted assasination after a car hit me, and it was his fault (at a roundabout, my right of way etc etc no need to bore you with the details), but i made do with what little bike handling skills i have to remain relatively unscathed and keep my bike in one piece.

got to CSS, went with the 18s and hand a nice ride out, i think we were all inspired by Big G's teamtalk. felt good, until i suddenly felt i was going to hurl, so down partridge i went, getting to cafe first again. now listen, i took the advice of not putting my bike up against the shop window (in order so others wouldnt stack bikes against mine), and put as far down the side as possible. instead i got 6 bikes piled on top of mine. there goes that idea.

i then left the cafe early, so that when i got dropped eventually by Sean Ullrich and co, i'd get swept up by the main group; obviously i need to have more faith in myself after muhammad schleck didnt get picked up by a single group. i then caught up with ullrich, jeff armstrong and a couple of their domestiques to ride the fastest i've ever done down (well uP) merstham, with a ride reminscent of his brother andy's at the giro. me and sean got to regalinos with time to spare. on the way back home, ullrich got a mechanical/took a pit stop/had enough of me sitting on the back and schleck took the win.

good ride overall. thanks to all.

Methinks someone needs a botanical lesson... GORSE! is yellow. It was bloomin' lovely up there last week too.

Nice ride with Mike Ingram around the Surrey hills - ducked off early though with Mark F in order to get to Coridorri to pick up a saddle and talk to the lovely Smiffy (I always get discount from him :D )

Yep, the views from the top of Ashdown were stunning.

We also rode back through Staffhurst Wood. The bluebells are at their best at the moment. A constant blue haze on both sides of the road as you speed through.

Here's a piccy from a couple of evenings ago strolling in Staffhurst Wood:
