Les Ingman Memorial RR - 26th April '09

In a determined effort to avoid DIY, after this morning's marshalling duties, I went to see the last couple of laps of the Les Ingman Memorial Road Race on the Bletchingley circuit.

A 7 man break-away stayed clear of the pack, with Steve Calland a convincing winner and Adam coming in 5th (I think).

Yep well done Adam, looked a tough race from the sidelines. It got pretty hot and Adam's face was a salty mess at the finish. Another impressive win from Steve Calland.

The original break, which never got more than 45s (except on the final lap) included 4 Dynamos (of which Stuart Spies, but he later blew out and abandonned), Steve C and Adam. Ian Paine seemed to be getting almost dropped but not quite, charging along solo a few seconds behind that group. Dan Felstead was leading a 4-5 group of chasers who managed to get onto them, but he later disappeared so must have had a mishap.Jon HA was seemingly always at the front of the chasing bunch. We really thought it would all come together on the final lap, but it seems the break got sight of the bunch and realised they would have to work extra hard on the last lap. We, were just lazing in the sun 8)

Good result Adam to make that decisive break, was very hot around noon and must have been super sweaty.

That's more like it.

Firstly I must thank all of you who were there for cheering me on, it makes a huge difference. Especially when your in a break, and the heat is really on. Also, fantastic to see Matt Ives out on his bike today.

So the race, what can I say? Obviously I'm pretty pleased with how it went, my forms building nicely, so it was about time I started making the race. I had a huge team around me today which was awesome, there were 12 of us starting I think. Though for some of them it was really only a learning race! They all fought well though, the bad luck all fell on one rider though, James Bowtell had 3 punctures! Some of you may have seen my new South African team mate today, what a beast he is! He had a free card today, as he only arrived in the UK Thursday, so he was free to get a feel for British racing. He did this by going up the road from the start! For the first 50km, he was in everything that moved, playing the perfect team mate to me meaning I could just sit back and wait.

Then on the 3rd lap, somehow (I'm really not sure how they managed it!), but 4 Dynamo's managed to escape the grasp of the peloton. Oh, not good! Luckily I had my team mates, Jean (the Saffa), Josh and Jaco to control the bunch, holding the Dynamos at a sensible distance. Then on the hill just before the finish (the windmill), the wiley old fox Calland made his move. Call it luck, call it tactical nous, whatever... the fact was I was right there on his wheel and went with him, and we worked well. In no time at all we got across, with Steve closing the last few meters, this was good as he said to the Dynamo's that we'd come through after the next hill as we needed to recover. They were never likely to argue with him. So I stayed in his wheel pulling my poker face to make it look like I was suffering more than I was.

Then the fact that I had 80km to ride against 4 team mates sunk in, I was having nightmares of the '01 Paris-Roubaix where George Hincapie got worked over by 4 Domo riders! But we worked fairly well, and whenever one of them tried to sit on, I would sit on them and force them through, either that or they would be riding themselves out the back. Which could have backfired on me, but it was a risk I had to take. I know Steve quite well now anyway, so it was always going to be 2 against 4 had they started attacking. But I don't think they had the legs. Then with about 2.5 laps to go, Alex Higham, Dan Felstead and David Streule (also Dynamo) appeared. There was about a lap of uncertainty while we pondered the rest of the race. Then as mentioned, with 1.5 laps to go, our service car went past and we had the horrible sight of the bunch about 20s back. But we weren't done yet, the experience of Calland and Higham meant the break was soon going like a train again and we had them out of sight once more.

We worked well until that last gravelly corner at the bottom of the circuit, where Tom Hemmant attacked just prior. He got a good gap, but it was a long way to go. Unfortunately for me, he attacked just as I was doing my turn. So I chased for about 20s then swung off, only to have Cam Austin next in line who also slowed, obviously! Next up was Dan Felstead who did a sterling job of holding Tom where he was. Then it was only Steve who had the legs to go on the hill. Mine told me to go forth and multiply at this point, and very nearly ceased altogether. Fortunately they didn't, but I was on the ropes. Luckily so was Alex Higham, so I was going to be at least 6th. As Steve disappeared into glory, Tom held on, Cam had gotten close. While David Streule just kept a bike length over me for 4th as I lunged past Dan in the closing meters.

So 5th, I couldn't have gone any harder today, so I have to be content with that. The most important aspect of the day was the fact I made it into the break in the first place. I'm learning.

Again, thanks to everyone for your support. It was great to see everyone.

Hey Adam, I don't know what the conclusion was about 'the type of rider you think you are'. Whatever it was you can clearly do well on very hilly courses so thats gotta be real pleasing. This result was only a matter of time of course. :D Well done mate, I'm pleased for you :D

Cheers Toks.

You see thats why I posed the question, because I've been learning a lot about my body over the last few months. Traditionally you all know me as a sprinter, but I'm far from pure sprinter. Yeah I've got a kick, but I'm nowhere near the likes of my new South African team mate Jean. He kicks just over 4w per kilo more than me over 5s, but then he does hold national titles on the track in SA! Like you say, my build actually gives me the ability to get up the short sharp climbs, which Jean struggled on after 100km. It's interesting I think. But, although I could climb to the A25 comfortably, the section on the A25 was really tough. So I'm not exactly a proper climber either!

It's cool isn't it! I took such a kicking in this race last year, but then there were one or two riders missing from last year, Moores and McNamara to name but two.

Too much information  .

Well done, on the race not the above investigative work. That drag up the A25 is a tough one as in your mind it's not a hill like those on the return leg of the lap.

REPORT FROM COMMS CAR 2

After 8 days ago at Chliham, where I got so cold, and stood around for so long, and really made myself feel bad the next day, I thought I would say 'stuff that' and see if I could get myself into a nice comfy car out of the predicted cold wind and showers. So I managed to pull a few strings at Norwood  , and lo and behold got into one of the race cars.

WHAT A RIDE! My word, that was as good as any Alton Towers roller coaster, that's for sure. The driver was Niall S ? and he was a really great driver. I took control of the CB radio, helping with time checks, reporting breaks back to the commissaire. I was looking backwards all the time and nearly wrenching my neck half out of it's socket trying to see who was off the front. The left hand turn onto the A25 at Bletchingly was a nightmare, the more the day went on,the busier the traffic got. It was a steady stream of cars in the end.

Then the left turn in Nutfield down Coopers Hill(?) Christ, the riders were doing 50mph down there, but I had complete trust in Nialls driving, I was looking behind to let him know whether to push on or slow up, all the while getting chucked around the car, and feeling like chucking up too! We were on the lookout for big vans coming up, there was only one horse on the whole circuit thank goodness, and he pulled in to let the riders pass, we were asking cars to slow down and pull over. I feel sorry for the leisure cyclist that were out, they would have got a hell of a shock as they are panting up some massive hill, only to see a mass of 80 multi coloured riders descending on them and taking up nearly the whole road, then swooping by in seconds.

I saw Jean Spies (in Gear) off the front for ages, about half a lap, that boy's got style. And then 4 Dynamos that went off the front. Why would you let 4 Dynamos go off the front like that :?: There were all sorts of pops off the front, it was a really active and agressive race. When Adam got into the decisive break by joining those 4 Dynamos along with Steve Calland I was willing him on, I got way over excited. Then my car got behind the lead group with about 3 laps to go, and I really wanted to lean out of the car window to shout encouragement to him, or to give them a time check but I wasn't allowed

Then another break happened and we had to sit in front of them for a while. With about half a lap to go, we decided they were protected enough with the moto marshalls, so we zoomed up to Outwood, just in time to see Steve Calland in the distance raise his arms at the finishing line, and to watch Adam, looking really knackered, have a mini sprint to the line to get 5th HURRAH!

It was a really hard race, fast and furious from the start. Of 80 riders who stared, I am sure only about 40 finished. NP had 10 in their team, in the end I think only 2 finished.

I had such a great time in the car, it's really interesting to be able to see what is happening from within the midst of the bunch as it were, and even more fab that Adam did so well. Thanks go to NP for letting a ringer into their team, what a fantastic day.
