Chain gang 29/4/09

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here
Blimey, so now you can get up the hills as well Ant  There goes my title of Chief ACC Hill Sprinter then

Oh I don't know about that mate, that climb just suits me as its an out an out power climb rather than being a horrid steep uphill which I loathe. Shame Sylv and Serge got the drop on me last night as I was matching them speed wise all the way up, I just didn't want to go flat out due to my knee (sounds like an excuse but its true :D ). You'll still leave me for dust on anything approaching a decent gradient.
I will agree with you on this point and its something I find frustrating that a club the size of ACC can't even get a dozen members out on a sunny wednesday evening to enjoy a few hard miles in good company. If smaller clubs can manage a great turn out like last night why can't we?
Lack of consistency I would say. We started the Wednesday night in January when it is dark and cold and not everbody's cup of tea. Last year we kept it going well into June if I remember. By that time it would frequently include riders from Norwood Paragon and Redhill. It died a quite natural death when mid-week racing was going full swing. This year it just seems to have stopped.

If people want to make it a regular thing (which I agree would be good), it needs to be just that, REGULAR AND REGULATED. Then you may attract others from other clubs who fancy a fast few miles on a summer's evening.

Can be difficult to keep going through the summer with Dunsfold & Palace on Tues, h/cap's on Thurs, but would be interested in Thurs evenings when no 'local' h/cap's. Wed's maybe too much, three evenings of hard rides

I might, but it depends n a number of factors. Not least of which is "How motivated do I feel to go and get a kicking?"

Fair play if you raced at Palace last night.

Well that was definitely a freebie.
The pace seemed alot slower than the Tuesday night chain gangs I did last month.
I enjoyed the training and riding in a group though but I need to race now to get some practise.

Not sure how but I managed to drop everyone going over Pol Hill.
Couldn't believe my eyes when I turned round to see who was coming round to take their turn at the front when noone was there.

19s is harder than that. Roll on Saturday.

Yes, this was certainly a gentler pace even than on previous Wednesdays - I'm sure if you're used to the Tuesday chaingangs, you'd have noticed the difference in pace.

Not the smoothest or best coordinated T&O ever, but still a worthwhile workout. Competing attractions - BikeFit night and the Chelsea game - meant that Agreeable involvement was limited to three - Ed, Apples and your servant.

It was the winter route last night, along the DC. The weather was a little iffy, so it was probably decided that the shorter route afforded more bail-out options if things did turn nasty.

After a steady start, I found it quite hard going up Badger's Mount and both down and up Polhill, and couldn't get past you at the front, Ed. I thought I might struggle after that but it seemed all the DP boys had genied their matches on those efforts, and I had no trouble getting back on. Things then got quite scattered on Farnborough Hill - in fact we had to wait quite a long time for the guys who'd gone fastest earlier.

When I say it wasn't the smoothest, I mean there were quite a few times when the wheel in front would slam back towards you alarmingly and with no notice - people would either brake for no reason, or suddenly jump out of the saddle and drop-kick you. Also, there was minimal verbal communication so people didn't always know when to move over at the front or if they were the last man. In a group as sizeable as last night's, I would have thought this went without saying.

Still, a useful bit of training as ever - probably the best riding you can do in such a short time. See you next week.
