MTB Ride Bank Holiday Monday - Leith Hill

Postby Andrew G » Thu Apr 23, 2009 1:02 pm

Okee dokee I feel the urge to act like a child and throw a bike at the scenery.

I'm doing Rye and Back on May 2nd (Saturday of Bank Holiday) but Monday looks free so howzabout.....

MTB Ride at Leith Hill Bank Holiday Monday (4th May)
Meet at 10am by Peaslake Village Stores - there is a car park just up the road.

General mooging about and acting like children in the Leith hill area is the closest there is to a plan, just thought it would be good to start over the other side from Peaslake to get in some good stuff and work our way over there for a bit of grub. A bit of a free for all as far as time is concerned, head back home when you're knackered.

I'll need to clear it with the boss when she gets back from Canadia, but potentially, yes.

Happy to start at Peaslake if you like then Marco but it would be nice to get over to Summer Lightening at some point too, I'll edit my original post for the location switch.

General idea is based around me wanting to chuck my bike around a load of drop-offs, step downs and whoop-de-whoops, or whatever the technical name for such likes is. I still ain't doing Deliverance though. What's that great fairly fast slightly downhill run called Marco? We did it last time I was out and was reasonably straight with step downs and dips all along it, we ducked sharp right (or left) and sort of through a bushy bit to get to it.

I think that is called either Yoghurt Pots or Rollercoaster. Start from viewpoint on Holmbury, head north (ie with your back to the view) and after 100 yards veer right and down, off camber left, up, gather speed and swoop right again. Can't miss it.

Alternatively it might be the Widowmaker - start at Holmbury Hill view point; look south at the view; ride straight down into the view :D

NB for anyone looking to start at Westcott, top of Holmbury (viewpoint) takes an hour off road via the Leith tower, then 10-15 mins down to Peaslake stores via Barry Knows Best, so 0830 park up at Westcott gets you to Peaslake by 10

A good group and good fun. We didn't go to the tower or do Summer Lightening as we didn't get over that way, largely due to spending a fair bit of time over Pitch Hill way on some nice trails Marco had found/been shown/remembered the other week.

Some great downhill singletrack today and fun in some of the usual places like yoghurt pots and telegraph as well.

Thanks to those that did the navigating as although I started the thread I'd have been playing it by ear a bit, and we wouldn't have covered as much ground and varied locations if it had been down to me as I don't know enough of the area well enough yet.

I noticed the sign for the road the carpark is on today, the lane is called Walking Bottom :D .

Second that. Had a great time riding some unfamiliar trails, annoying everyone with my maddeningly squeaking gears. Return was uneventful, did Yogurt Pots then the draggy climb up to High Ashes Farm and then tea and cake at the tower. 28 miles at an average 8.6mph
