Women's cycling

Postby CaroleH » Tue Apr 28, 2009 12:44 pm

Hi

As a named person for womens cycling, apparently I should be doing something to promote, encourage, cajoul - any word you'd like to us.

Have no idea what the female members ( and  ) would like so perhaps you could PM me and tell me and I'll see what I can do.

As a dress wearing cyclist (don't worry - I'll not repost THAT pic) - do I have a say in this?

If so - I think the club kit should be pink and purple

I think (and this is stating the blindingly obvious I realise) that the main difficulty for women in the club is simply that there aren't enough of us. Us women, like the guys, all want to do different things - some to race, some TT, some sportives, some just ride in club run - and are at different levels of fitness. So if you want to get a group of women doing the same thing, e.g. racing together, you will need to get many more women in the club. Some ideas:

- Website redesign - Chloe mentioned that there are plans to feature women doing different types of cycling / at different levels
- Encourage club members to bring women friends / WAGs / family members to a club run. The club run is already very well set up to deal with riders at all levels
- Buy a small number of bikes for people to borrow - so they can try out riding on a road bike before they commit. Sometimes beginners come along on a hybrid or mountain bike
- Targeting women cyclists - Marco had the idea of using facebook I think? Not sure if he tried it or not
- Targeting women who are involved in other sports already
- A creche! Or alternatively, all the guys with children could stay at home one Saturday morning a month, and let their wives come out instead

I'm liking your last idea a lot Bridget. In this better weather (cue downpour) maybe we could have this creche at Lloyds Park or a.n.other outdoor convenient location, all get together, let the kids blow some steam and just have some fun. I'll ask Mrs Snoop and see if she'd be up for this. Maybe a shorter ride etc...

On the buy bike thing I think there are lots of logistical challenges and perhaps insurance things to consider before we could nail this expensive option. Maybe there's somewhere we could do a hire from to test the water first?

Keep 'em coming folks

Paul, apart from Chloe is there anyone else that we can put forward into this event. Has Carol started/considered Road Racing yet?

I think Clare could be persuaded, though she could do with getting a few more races under her belt.

Thanks for the feed back - was thinking if there was anything woman specific that could be organised? For example, I would love a go at road racing but have no idea what to expect. For some it would be TT etc. Any ideas?
