Hmm, love it, hate it, love it, hate it, im really not sure
The circuit is great, exciting, fast, thrilling, and most of the time i love it, but that effing hill
. Im sure someone has landscaped it over the winter and made it steeper. Every week I think I'm going to find it slightly easier than the previous one, how bloody stupid am I
.
I know its still early season and I know its going to take a few more weeks to find my legs, I just hope it doesn't take too long. I think I'm slightly ahead of where I was last year so I shouldn't complain, but its hard not to when your legs are screaming their t*ts off at the top of the crystal palace hill for the 17th time. Thats what lap I was on last night when I decided enough was enough. Actually it wasn't me that decided to jack it in, it was my legs. Riding right on my max for 17laps finally took its toll on them, just before the top of the climb where I totally ran out of energy, stopped pedalling and watched as the group eased itself away. Funny thing though, from just coasting along, I was only about 25m off the back of the group as I approached the hairpin bend, and I almost decided to try to get back on. The thought was a very brief one
. I soft pedalled round another lap for a warm down, pulled over and watched the rest of the race from the grass.
The race started with me at the back of a fairly large field and I was pretty annoyed with myself for letting this happen. Usually, 2 warm up laps and a little short 'down to the hairpin and back' is about the right time to then line up, 2nd row. I obviously wasn't concentrating enough to notice too few riders around me on the second lap. O dear, thinking about it now, maybe I usually only do 1 full lap, Doh!!!!!!!
. Old age i reckon.
Anyway, getting toward the front as soon as possible was of prime importance. If not, I'd be stuck in the pack, and thats a tough place to get out of. So, from the off, it was full tilt down the outside (my favourite move from last year) while everyone is tiptoeing their way to the first hairpin, wide round the bend with good exit speed and a bit of grass tracking thrown in, and Bob's your auntie's brother, job done
. This is where I stayed, probably about 15th to 20th, pretty much the whole time. The group kept shrinking though, until I found I was at the back of it. There were riders all the way around the course suffering their own little hell, and it was funny to see so many people with pain written across their faces, all in the name of fun
. A group of 4 did get away and stay away, which was impressive, and as these 4 were doing all the work at the front anyway, it was no real surprise when shouts to work together to try and close the gap to them, fell on deaf ears.
Lap after lap the lactic acid was building in my legs, until....... well you know the rest
Well done Hal, that was a great ride.
Well done Graeme, the first is definately the hardest.
Well done all
Oh yeah, Mark, did the 2 packets of crisps, a king size snickers and a king size mars bar just before the race help or hinder your performance
See you next week
