Chain gang 29/4/09

I know all this training business makes us sound a bit serious but, well, some people really are into this bike lark so feel free to talk about all training & self improvement related topics in here

I did wonder if you could actually see out of those shades but thought not to ask a stupid question. 8)

Went along to this last night. As Ed says, it is quite a bit easier than the Tuesday / Thursday evening rides, and is more accomodating to new riders (i.e. more waiting for stragglers). If you want a hard ride though, I would stick to Tuesdays and Thursdays..

Had a good ride, but we were riding in quite a bit of mist as we rode up Layhams road. The group decided to cut the ride short because of the visibility, but I was quite up for a hard ride, so split from the main group as tey turned off for biggin hill.

I did the full ride round to Poll Hill. The mist cleared as I descended down to pilgrims way so I had quite good ride. I was able to push myself quite a bit and really enjoyed it.

There were quitre a few of us out last night. We really should arrange to get out together, rather than piggy backing on the Dulwich Ride...

Oh, good - I wasn't quite sure whether you'd meant to go off on your own, or had just missed the turn.

Funny one last night, but I still quite enjoyed it. We started off as a large single group, the idea being to let a natural split happen at the top of Layhams. There was quite an array of abilities out last night so things sorted themselves out pretty quickly. Graham jumped on at West Wickham and was soon powering up the front. Apples, gentleman gallant that he is, assisted a damsel in distress for a while but had to dump her and work hard to get back into the fast group.

The higher we got, the deeper into a cloud we went, and the less advisable a T&O became. Things became a little farcical at the top as we crossed over towards Titsey, as three different people suffered catastrophic accessory failure - bits were flying off their bike left, right and centre.

At some point there was a barely-mumbled agreement to scrap the original route and head back via Biggin Hill. A couple of people got a bit stroppy at how well this was communicated - as we turned left off Titsey at Clarks Lane, people were still off the back collecting and arranging their bits and wouldn't necessarily know there'd been a change of route.

A regroup at the top of Westerham Hill was followed by a storming T&O to Bromley and beyond - the first time we'd really 'let out the shaft' that evening. Ed peeled off for home (well, I assume he was going home) around Beckenham, leaving me and Apples at the mercy of the regulars who knew where they were going. Their route was less than intuitive, and took us through some serious residentialia - once or twice I felt sure we were in fact going round to someone's gran's for tea. Alas, no.

Eventually we found ourselves at the fool of Crystal Palace Road, so I gave it a last push and turned off for Dulwich and home.

A bit disjointed in terms of the group dynamics, and a rather dreich evening, but overall a good ride nonetheless.

Giving blood next week, so back in two weeks.

I think the pace picked up a bit once we got round to Biggin Hill and the roads were clear. I was told to ease off a few times but that's fair enough.

What's convenient for me is the start location Elmers End. I could meet nearer to CSS but may not be able to commit to a 7:15 start.
I think there's enough of us to do our own thing although I'm keen to give Palace and Hillingdon and even Hog Hill a try  Not all in the same week mind but may put any midweek training ride plans on hold till the winter.

I feel like I've had a work out today and my cold is much worse now
May try a medicinal brandy, beer or red wine tonight  Colds are rubbish and Lemsips are crap :x Long live beer

I'm trying to get out on Tuesdays / Thurdsays ...to be honest, its much easier if I have someone to meet.

I want to have another crack at Palace on Tuesday next week, but would be up for something on Thursday Evening, if anyones up for it. Could have a go at 'Huws Horrible Hills', which is nasty

Hi Graham,

I went along last night too. It was my first time so I sat in the second group as I wasn't sure what to expect. I'm guessing you were the guy in our addiscombe shirt?

I really enjoyed the hard efforts up the hills and the T&O through Biggin Hill to Bromley was stonking! I found myself frequently swapping positions on the front with a guy who looked like a New Romantic (blond wedge)/German SS Officer wearing tubi grip as arm warmers!! At the end I found myself following the guys through some back gardens until we emerged in Clockhouse and Penge High Street. Anyway peeled off there and zoomed back to Caterham for some nosh! 50 miles in all and a really good work out. I may try my luck in the faster group next week and see how it goes. Thanks DP for the ride (I do like their kit design).

Say hello next time. Apples (another accer was there last night as well, but he was in disguise)..

Ta,

Graham.

I'll stay in disguise until I know that I can hold my own. Dont want to bring any shame on the mighty ACC. Still, last night I did Quick Step proud! I understand that the Wednesday run out is easier than the Tues and Thurs yet reading between the lines the faster group on the Wednesday is comparative with the Tue and Thur. I know its difficult to say but how intense is it and could it be compared to any of our club runs? What average speed did you guys bang out overall?
