Surrey League Handicap 14/05/09

Well what a hoot that was :D

I had been anxious/excited about this all day, the long awaited return to road racing. Got there nice and early saw, Adam, Dave P, and Jim B. I then found the Addiscombe posse and got some advice from Keith and heard about Marek's current training and nutrition programme

After a warm up went to the start it was 5 laps and I was in the first group. Off we went and I have to admit I was feeling pretty good. Did a bit on work and then a guy from VC des Londres tried to get us organised on a fast downhill stretch and I thought this could be pretty good. The co-operation seemed to last about half a lap and I had noticed that after getting us organised the VC guy sat on the back for quite a while, very cunning.

So on the back draggy section of the course for the second lap I found myself second wheel of 2 Agreeables at the front and nobody else seemed to be bothered about working so I thought, time to go. Now there were a couple of strong guys in the group and I thought this might provoke a split. I jumped, snicked it up a gear and jumped again on the drag to the motorway bridge, looked under my arm had a gap, nobody else was moving. Head down and off I went.

I then had the horrible when will they catch me thoughts, but just got on with it. Up the hill before the finish and 3 laps to go. Tried not to kill myself on the draggy sections, heart rate pinging nicely between 80 and 90%, concentrating on the lead car trying to be smooth and quick round the corners. Get to where I jumped previously, still in the lead, left past the dog and duck, to cheers from the fan club (wife, kids and family friends) head down keep going.

2 laps to go. Keep pushing on, come to the right turn to Kings Mill Lane, look over my shoulder to swing right and see a group coming up fast. Round the corner up the drag and a shout from Keith, I tack in to the middle of about 9 riders including Marek and Jim B and it is into survival mode. Really begin to suffer like a dog to hang on. Hill before the finish and the group starts to creep away. B*****ks!!

So back to being on my own, head down round the circuit. It is getting dark and raining now. Have to take my glasses off because I can't see. Plug on can't see anybody behind me. Past the Dog and Duck and the fans (much to the relief of my middle son who thought I would be in the ambulance because I had been dropped from the group  ). Start the downhill section towards that final hill. I remember looking over my shoulder about 100 yards before it and seeing nobody. Started to grind up the hill getting to the breast and a spectator shouts "come on dig in you're in for about 10th". At this two of Adam's team come flying past, where the hell did they come from. Start my dig for the line  Hear somebody say "sorry mate" and it's Adam who to me quite frankly looks like he's on a club run as my legs are turning to jelly to try and hold him off. No chance.

Cross the line about 14th I think. Keith got 4th and Marek 6th.

Lesson learnt. Patience. Should have waited for second group to come through. But you know what, it doesn't matter I thoroughly enjoyed myself and it was one of the best training races I've had in ages 8)

The recovery Kronenbourg is doing wonders.

That was a top ride for your first effort in 20 years mate. I tip my hat to you.

Sorry I came past you at the finish, but I couldn't resist the one/two/three InGear bunch sprint. If I deprived you of tenth I will buy you another one of those recovery kronenbourgs!

Top bombing from Keith and Marek too.

[quote="Dominic"]... and got some advice from Keith ...
There's your first mistake. ;-)

Relatively small numbers for last night's handicap. I'd guess around 45? I got set off in the 3rd (of 5) groups with the rest of the non-geriatric 3rd Cat racers (I've not got long to be so smug ). About 7 of us, I think. A strong group, and the first two laps were taken at warp speed. A bit too hot for me If I wanted to get to the end with the scratch group when they came by....

The through-and-off that most of our group were doing (not fancy it, Marek? ) broke down. I think partly because the pace was too quick - there would be a break in the chain and somebody would get left on the front, so people would be reluctant to come through, so there would be a break in the chain, and so on. It went into 5 people taking turns on the front, which seemed to keep us moving along nicely.

In turn, we came past the second and first groups ahead on the road. Surprisingly, we didn't seem to amass into one huge group as often happens in the handicaps. Perhaps it's because we came past the groups just before the steep hill, an ideal place to get shelled. Despite coming past the first group Michelle hollered "15 seconds" as we crossed the line. Still no sign of the lead car. Who's gone off the front? A few minutes later we come across the lone leader; Dominic. :D

I don't remember it raining, just huge amounts of spray started coming up off the road. By the finish I was soaked.

Half way into the Last lap and we'd still not been caught. One of the strong Peason riders started attacking, but wasn't allowed to escape. The strong TSN rider (sorry guys if you're reading this, I'm cr@p with names) sat on the front on the last straight, and we were all happy to let him do so. Final hill and the same Pearson rider was the first to go. Into the steep part and I'm relegated to 4th, and this is how it remains in the sprint to the finish. (I've still got a long way to go until I'm competitive come the end of a race.) A win for Corridori, followd by 2 Pearsons, and then me.

Well done Keith and Dom for being active and noticeable all race. Good support from Gavin, Jon B and well done Marek for comfortably holding your place in the 4ths/women's group :D ). It got pretty tough out there when the rain started coming down and darkness descended even if it did make things more interesting to watch :D Thanks also to you all (and Michelle) for supporting Chloe

This is bloody annoying...

...it happened on tuesday at Dunsfold (again) and its very frustrating. In that case it was down to the rider coming through being recovered after his time off the front and, feeling a bit stronger as he comes through, not dropping his pace slightly when he hits the front. So a gap develops between him and the guy previously on the front, the following rider sees the front rider open a gap and goes with him in case its an attack, the formation goes to pot and you have to start all over again. Net result is the group goes slower than it does when the lead rider eases off to allow the next rider through. You shouldn't have to shout at 3rd cats to "ease off at the front" when the group visibly slows down every time it happens but that's what was going on. They got it right in the end though, on about laps eight out of ten
