Bikefit - Wow!

Postby Snoop Doug » Fri May 15, 2009 5:40 pm

Nick de Meyer came round to see me today.

He brought gizmos and gadgets, laptops and lasers, methods and measures. You can buy all these down the shops.

He also brought insight, intuition, a friendly smile and an ability to explain his technical genius such that even I could understand it. You can't buy any of these down the shops.

He spent 3 hours fiddlin and faffing with my bike, my shoes, my bike, my shoes, then my other bike.....you get the picture.

I shan't embarrass myself (or more importantly the so called experts who so expertly lightened my wallet @ the time of purchase) by telling you how out of whack my bike set ups were. Let's just say that they are much, much better now.

Nick also helped me spot some glaring technique inadequacies which I can now work on with my funky new comfortable riding position.

I can't recommend this guy highly enough. Passionate about what he does, I'd recommend Nick and his magick to anyone who thinks they might benefit from a professional set up. Top bloke.

Cheers - Snoop

A small fraction of the cost of the bikes.

I also had Nick come round and have alook at my set up,bike, shoes etc.Loved his computer set up were you could see your pedaling, power and HR.He put some wedges under my cleats. It seems i have one leg longer than the other, wondered why i had been walking round with a limp.Got a big ride on Sunday,so that will be the big test.

He did me and Chloe too.

My efficiency and left/right power delivery was very good but I have wonky feet and my knee tracking was the shape of an 's' - so stuck some wedges under my cleats to improve it. Also a couple of small adjustments to bike set-up. I immediately saw a 20w increase on the powertap at sweet spot intensity during the test which was also there during my next session on the rollers

More testing required as gains should actually appear after some time to familliarise with the changes, but initially things look good.

Chloe has one teeny short leg and one massive long one so wedges corrected her over-reaching on one side. She reports an improved 'feel' on the pedal stroke and she won her first race today so even if the bikefit isn't directly responsible, it certainly didn't do any harm :D

fifty English pounds is the discount price for ACC members for a limited period only - but demand means that Nick's time and supply of wedges is dwindling - so book early!

I know it sounds like I am taking the urine but does that price cover the set up of more than one bike eg road bike and TT bike?

Such service...Nick came to my office and carried out his dynamic bit fit on me in the meeting room. That got the staff wondering!

My previous set up was purely guess work and my feeble attempts at following the advice given by experts in Huw's comic and the like. It really is a two man job if attempting by yourself??? Or a one man and a laser, big boys Oxford geometry set and a clever bit of software and bionic man style sensors capable of creating a virtual wind tunnel in an office in Purley High Street. It transpired that I have got one leg much shorter than the other two but sadly I need more than wedges to sort that! My saddle height ended up being increased a huge 25mm and set back more and Nick also adjusted my cleats.

This all resulted in a much straighter, less hunched back and greater leverage being generated by my thigh bone. On an initial 2 minute test run I immediately felt an improvement. So I gladly parted with a bull’s-eye and a little bit more for a pair of wedges and decided that evening I would put my new set up through its paces.

I rode one of my routes that I had only just a few days previously ridden and compared data. I saw an improvement in cadence, speed, watts and most noticeably a dramatic drop in average heart rate. So previously my scrunched up position was restricting the efficiency of my diaphragm and breathing. Since then I have ridden the King of the Downs and am happy to report no issues.

Thanks Nick and your gizmos!

I'm sure you won't regret it..Money well worth it. Think of it as 2 new innertubes and a pair of cleats.
