All that matters is the final placings. By my 18th place I must have had a disappointing race.
Far from it, I enjoyed the race.
Kenardington is way down by Ashford, about an hours drive from home. A 10km rolling circuit with a few hills big enough to make your legs hurt (rather than those hills that made me cry at Chilham ). A strong SW wind was blowing throughout the race. Entry was around 70 riders.
A few tried unsuccessfully to get away on the first lap, then on the second I heard the divison bell ring - 2 Dynamos went up the road, to be followed by one of my "marked" riders (those with good recent form). A breakaway group formed of 6 riders (1 Dynamo, 1 Pheonix, 1GS Invicta, 2 unmarked and 1 ACC ), and with a few exceptions we started working pretty well together. After a few laps the 2nd race car slotted in behind us - always a good sign. On lap 4 the heavens opened. This brought the lap times down a little as we crept around the bends. By lap 7 we started to lose the battle. People stopped coming through and the commitment on the front was lacking. With a lap to go the 2nd car pulled out, the peloton had us in sight and we called it a day.
One local rider did manage to pull away from the 40 strong peloton on the last time up the steep hill, and to his credit managed to stay away for the win. So, to a mass sprint and my 18th place after a 55km breakaway.
As ever, I really reccommend these SERRL races.
