Mark Bolton MSe of the Warlingham Green clinic has sorted me out, what a great man.
The muscle in my outer upper leg that runs between the Hamstring and Quad, if only I could remember what he called it, well anyway it was very tight and is a very common cycling injury.
Because it is tight, it pulls the knee cap over to one side which causes pain below the knee.
He worked that muscle loose and hey presto I can walk again, still a bit tender but I'm so relieved.
Told not to ride for at least 2 days and only ride to Brighton is it had totally cleared up.
I'm off to pilates tonight where Adam can give me some advice on stretching it and keeping it stretched.

I think it's the one called 'Tensor fascie latae' on the right there.
Whatever it's called I'm well happy now.
Marky Mark might just make Brighton
