Hard cash would be a better option 8) 8) 8)

At the last two Dunsfold's the results have been completely wrong, and Chloe was demoted a couple of places in the results at Palace despite there only being 6 girls in the race all riding individually - clearly taking numbers is harder than it looks

[quote="-Adam-"]One would have thought judging that finish would have been fairly straight forward given the fact it was so strung out, obviously not.

Having done number spotting on a few occasions it isn't always that easy even if people are spread out. A lot depends on how people have pinned their numbers on. Your jersey often rucks a bit during a race and depending where the number is then you can end up with a "was that a 6,8,0 or a 1,7" and various other possibilities. Also you often find numbers are pinned in different places on the jersey so you have to keep flicking your eyes up and down and twisting at an angle to spot the number, that's without the up and down scanning needed for different sizes of rider.

When people finish together you've then got the problem of the above combined with partial obscuring from bodies, arms, heads, bikes.

I wasn't at this race so don't know what it was like or how the numbers were attached etc, but it ain't always as easy as it seems. Really you want dictaphones to just call out in to that, otherwise I think you need one caller and one writer as each judge or it becomes a nightmare to try and write legible numbers in order whilst watching the riders and picking the numbers out. I go on numbers too even when I know the riders as I can't write the names quick enough and I find it more tricky for my mind to keep switching between numbers and names as people come streaming past.

Sylv, that is excellent, god knows how you came across that. Not sure why we don't do that over here, would save Glyn bringing his ladder to every race.

Andrew, I hear what your saying. Almost everytime I did Chertsey last year I assisted Glyn in judging for the womens and the ladies, and yes, I was crap. I could get maybe the top 5 in the bunch sprint of the 4ths, the womens I found much easier however, being strung out.

If I am honest, a potential 11th place in a handicap, is not all that high up on my priorities.

Though I would say, Micheal Ladbrook who was placed 11th, over Dom, was way, way back down the road. As was Dave, who is above constesting that sort of a finish in a handicap!

Dom and I crossed the line together, with me about half a bike ahead (sorry again Dom, but you never know what place your sprinting for!), on Dom's right. Obviously whoever was judging would have been so from Dom's side, so I would have been obscured. In this instance I might have thought being bright orange may have helped, particularly if Huw was actually number spotting, or if Keith (Butler) was judging. Perhaps not.

C'est la vie.

As it's Newchappel this week (and I'm a finishing judge) I suggest we ensure numbers are attached sideways on the left (providing its the usual finish past the golf course).

Absolutely Huw, It is not easy, and the strange thing is that when we get it right no-one says anything, like "well done" but get one place wrong and all hell breaks loose.

I reckon that as I have had a lot of practice, I am pretty good, but do make mistakes. When I judged the BM cyclo cross (as commissaire) I got the most abusive email from a parent whose son was 16th and not 20th in the Under 12's.

Adam, I guess now that you can appreciate that time at Dunsfold where you didn't get the win you felt you deserved, that you just have to call it as you see it.
