Lewes Evening Criterium - 4th/11th/18th June 09

How I did in the race is irrelevant since after the finish the commissionaire said he was going to disqualify me.

Why? Because I crossed a solid white line during the race.

I recall crossing a solid white line only once in the race, so can only assume that's the offending incidence. A 4km section of dead straight road called "The Broyle". The whole bunch was together, and the pace was up and down as attacks went, and were brought back. On one slowing, rather than touch the brakes, I moved out over the solid white line (no traffic visible ahead). As gaps reappeared in the group, I moved back onto the legal side of the road, having gained a few places.

Later on the same stretch of road (when I was on the correct side of any solid lines), I could hear a car horn honking behind, presumably the commissionaire's, so I can only assume that a number of riders will have been disqualified.

At the pre-race briefing the commissionaire, as is normal, reminded us that the rules of the road applied to us, including crossing solid white lines, explicitly stating that infringements risked disqualification.

Hence I can have no argument with the commissionaire's decision since I did cross the line, even if only once, and did gain position in doing so.

So, to all racers out there, be warned. It would be heart-breaking to cross the finish line first only to find that it didn't count because you didn't obey the rules of the road. (Don't get the wrong idea, I wasn't first over the line, but it could happen to any one of us.)

Additionally I'm not proud of having been disqualified from a race and whilst representing Addiscombe. :oops:

Tom Boonen also has problems with white lines so you're in exalted company

What about the event itself - any good?

Not that I’ve done many races but I’ve heard them say this on the start line.. Even at dunsfold about crossing the cones. (now that’s funny as at a race at dunsfold a few weeks ago my friend Bex’s and I saw it looking really tight when the 4th cats were going around knocking all the cones over and decided to take it on ourselves to moved the cones out a good 2 meters wider .. How naughty )

I understand its about the safety of on coming cars but what about junction when you all swing wide?

WHAT??? Did you feel bad for Myra Hindley? Fred West? Peter Sutcliffe - criminals the lot of 'em. I heard that Franco was a decent sort 'til he got away with going across the white line in the Spanish national championships... and look what that led to...

Actually I was DQ'd once in a mountain bike race. Went outside the tapes. The fact that the tapes were attached to poles which had been blown out of the ground did little to impress the commissaire and I was out on my ear. Honestly, I though British Cycling were going to bring back hanging they took it so seriously.

Bad luck. I'm all for penalising dangerous riding and abusing the road in races but this sounds a bit draconian.

Commissionaire??
They stand outside swank hotels and used to stand outside cinemas and theatres.
Commissaires officiate at cycle races.

So it's week 2 of 3.

I managed to not get disqualified this week :D . I certainly didn't cross an solid white lines, although I did notice quite a few others doing so.

The course is the large triangle of roads on this map.

The race is dominated by a strong south westerly wind.

5 laps, with primes on laps 2, 3 and 4.

On lap 1, on one of those tricky straight, wide, smooth roads there was a crash :roll: . I managed to steer around it. There wasn't much of the characteristic noise of carbon on tarmac, so I suspect most fell into the verge. Speaking to the Commissaire (thanks John the old'un) afterwards, nobody was seriously hurt.

Anyway, a break of 4 riders gets away on the 2nd lap.

Now in the field of 70-ish riders there's over 20 riders from just 2 local clubs, including the club hosting the event. There's no representative from either of these clubs in the break. I hedge my bets on a serious chase being organised. It doesn't materialise, so I have to settle for 5th.
