...on my commute.
Just riding up to the lights at London Bridge this morning there was a bloke in front of me (a bit ahead the other side of a car) who was on a road bike in some Marco-esque uber loud shorts and a t-shirt. He appeared to be leaning on a piece of wood (similar to the way you hold on to a railing) and I though that looks like a bloody difficult way to carry a 2x2 on a bike.
The lights changed and he pushed off from the wood, giving a further tap to the floor with it to get going and then flipped it round so the end of it rested on the bars.
It was at this point that I realised he only had one leg and the wood was an old style crutch that goes under your armpit! Unlike some I've seen who cycle with a false leg, he had nowt just a stump that was so short it didn't reach the end of his shorts but he cycled along through London traffic one legged (trainer and a loose old style toe strap). He went up and over the bridge both smooth and fast over-taking loads of people, he was dead still and straight bodied and if it wasn't for the crutch and one crank spinning on its tod you'd never now.
It really was a most remarkable thing to witness, and I have to say a joy too.
Next time you get a bit of road rash it doesn't look like an excuse to stay off the bike anymore.
