Cosmic Carbon SLs

Postby Graham O » Tue Jun 16, 2009 3:49 pm

I'm a bit of a sucker for new wheels...I have always kinda wanted a set of deep section wheels. Furthermore, I have realised that I am not getting faster with age, so am going to have to start spending to keep up with all the young uns...

Does anyone have experience of the Mavic Carbone SL. I know that they aren't carbon but have a good reputation and I saw a set on the club run at the weekend which looked kinda special...

I have done a little research, and what people seem to say is that they do not spin up that well, but do hold speed. Apparently they don't mix with hills or wind....

Any better alternates without the need for glue or changing brake pads !!

R1s - Don't think these will be that different to my R3s....
Like the 7850s, but they are not deep section so don't make the wrrry sound......

Never ridden them but reputed to be heavy but bombproof (Marek hasn't broken his yet which says something for the strength).

Sounds about right although not sure about the wind unless you weigh yourself on kitchen scales, presumably they were referring to cross winds. Deep sections of that depth don't drag you about much, just the odd little pull to the side if you pass a gap in some hedges for example so get a sudden cross wind.

If you want some deep sections for race wheels then I don't think you can go wrong with Planet X 50s for VFM. Light and spin up very well, excellent hubs. If race wheels only then tubs not clinchers. Aluminium braking surfaces on any carbon rims add weight on the outside edge of the wheel, the place you least want it, so worth bearing in mind. Otherwise you can end up with some flashy looking wheels that perform no better than your current wheels.

I bought some recently and have used them in a couple of races.

So far I think they're great and do exactly what I need them to do (ie go fast, bomb proof, easy to repair punctures and brake easily). Looked at Planet X too but preferred being able to mend my own punctures the way I know how rather than learning how to sort out tubs  .

Oooh and GBs were doing a fantastic deal on them so they were nowhere near RRP! :D

I'd recommend the Planet-X too. I got the clincher version so still easy to fix punctures, but they are still carbon rims to you will need carbon specific brake pads. They're nice and light though, ~1500g i think so still climb well.

If you're dead set on alu rims, then check out the Hed Jet 4 or Jet 6 (40mm and 60mm respectively).

I really like the look of these Soul C4.0 Carbon Clincher

Light and affordable, and with a full carbon rim on which you can use ordinary brake pads! You'd have to wait a couple of weeks for shipping from Singapore, but from what I can tell customer service is excellent. I've been in touch with Sean at Soul Bike via email in the past and he seems like a stand up guy.

I'd really love a pair of Reynolds DV46C ULs, but their performance would be offset by the hernia that their price would induce.

Hmmm, those qoroz http://www.ekmpowershop6.com/ekmps/shops/pcycles/qoroz-50mm-deep-section-carbon-wheel-package-113-p.asp ones on that site look quite tempting too.

Need some wheels for my new TT bike 'pink marshmallow' build. Have been doing it on a budget so far, but pondering how much to blow on the wheels....

The Qoroz and Novatec wheels do look nice, but the full carbon, deep section ones are tubulars, and Graham was after clinchers. He also didn't want to change brake pads, which usually restricts you to an all-aluminium or carbon/alloy hybrid rim.

The Soul wheels, on the other hand, have a kevlar and ceramic impregnated braking surface so don't require different brake pads. So you can have your clincher tyres, use standard brake pads and have the weight advantage of a full carbon rim. Nice.

It looks like there lots of options here and these types of wheels seem to command quite a premium price, so I guess I have to start saving.

I probably think abou this again when I come to replace by Fulcrum R3's as my day to day wheels. My DT Swiss really aren't strong enough to be day to day wheels. They needed surgery again after last weeks club run.

The rims on my Fulcrum 3s are quite worn, so this may be sooner rather than later. One of the chaps in GB's commented on this the last time I was in there. I reckon that they will be demoted to commuting \ winter duties after this summer.

Of the wheels I have seen, I like the SRAM s40s, but they are too expensive and the affordability of the planet-x is hard to deny. In the end though it will all boil down to cash. Al wheels seem to be v expensive this year.
