[quote="Ivor"] Have been doing it on a budget so far, but pondering how much to blow on the wheels....

As much as you can afford, wheels are the most important bit on any bike as far as speed and performance is concerned. Low rim weight, good quality hubs.[quote="Graham O"]In the end though it will all boil down to cash. Al wheels seem to be v expensive this year.

Not just wheels with the ROE.

Whats the use of good wheels if the frame in between them flexes like crazy?

You'd do well to find a particularly flexy race frame these days. If you put out huge power like a Hutch or similar maybe but otherwise unlikely.

Wheels are always the first upgrade, if you need to upgrade the frame and all the other bits and bobs also need upgrading then you're buying a new bike.

An average frame can be used in a decent performing bike with good wheels, you put average wheels in a good frame and the result is much worse.

I can assure you I have ridden some very flexy frames in the last year.

I agree putting crap wheels on a super good frame is not ideal. But personally, I'd rather have my R3 and compartitively cheap handbuilt wheels (Like I do), than a cheap frame and some first class wheels...

Sylv,

Thanks for the offer, but there is issue of coming up £689. I am definitely in saving up mode for the moment.

It is true that I seem to have a love hate relationship with wheels...

Ta,

Graham.

getting back to the point...

Are deep dish wheels worth it. I have kinda got the impression that....

1) If you buy them with alloy rims, they are likely to be expensive and heavy / slow, but pretty..
2) If you buy carbon rims, they are likely to be fast, but a right pain to use, so are really only suited for racing.
3) everyone likes to chat about them...

If only I could try some, to sus out whether they are worth it...

PS - This is all idle banter, as my money is already allocated to mortgage, bills, hgousehold maintenance, childrens swimming, tennis, piano and violin lessons, and saving for retirement, oh, and saving for kids university and lastly my single solitory beer after cycling on a saturday.....(can't see one of those yellow face things with tears !!)

anyway back to the wheels - which do ya reckon then.....
