Sylv,

Thanks for the offer, but there is issue of coming up £689. I am definitely in saving up mode for the moment.

It is true that I seem to have a love hate relationship with wheels...

Ta,

Graham.

getting back to the point...

Are deep dish wheels worth it. I have kinda got the impression that....

1) If you buy them with alloy rims, they are likely to be expensive and heavy / slow, but pretty..
2) If you buy carbon rims, they are likely to be fast, but a right pain to use, so are really only suited for racing.
3) everyone likes to chat about them...

If only I could try some, to sus out whether they are worth it...

PS - This is all idle banter, as my money is already allocated to mortgage, bills, hgousehold maintenance, childrens swimming, tennis, piano and violin lessons, and saving for retirement, oh, and saving for kids university and lastly my single solitory beer after cycling on a saturday.....(can't see one of those yellow face things with tears !!)

anyway back to the wheels - which do ya reckon then.....

Apart from the well known pros & cons of tubs vs. clinchers (safety in event of a flat, lighter rims vs ease of puncture repair) there's a whole debate over whether tubs are actually any faster than clinchers; apparently some test results show that they suffer from higher rolling resistance because of hysteresis losses in the glue used to hold the tyre to the rim i.e. tyre squirm. Google something like "tubular vs. clincher rolling resistance" and you'll find some interesting discussions.

Soul used to use the same Gigantex rim as the Planet X, but switched to different ones that are lighter and don't require the use of offset brake cartridges with carbon-specific pads. And the C4.0 is only $US750! Even by the time you add shipping and duty they'll be cheaper than some heavier alloy rimmed wheels.
