Coolest helmet?

Postby Amy » Mon Jun 22, 2009 1:58 pm

and I mean that from the not overheating point of view...

I think I really do need a new helmet and was wondering what's the best on the market (and when do they bring the new stuff out so I can buy the old one cheap  )

And I want it in white :D

Another vote for LAS, my TT lid is the most comfy cycle helmet I've ever used.

It all depends on the shape of your head.

I've got a Giro-shaped head. Their helmets are comfy, and Bell and LAS helmets just do not fit me.

Having said that, the last two road helmets I've bought have been Specialized. On Saturday, I bought an S-Works, in white, 'cos it fits well, and looks to have loads of air rather than loads of foam. I'm planning to go for a ride in it tonight, and will let you know how it performs on the bonce-cooling front later. RRP is £110, but my LBS gives me a discount on the grounds that they think I'm a good guy (this may have been influenced by my occasionally dropping packets of biscuits on the counter).

Yup, I've got two specialised helmets (the only ones I found that fitted me ok), one of them is the s-works (the other the standard basic one) and the s-works is extremely cool, being so light makes a huge difference to comfort and heat too.

How about a bell-shaped purple helmet?

I got a LAS something-or-other at GBs a few week's back. They were waiting for a delivery of the new model and only had two colours (including white), so it was a bit of a bargain.

As per Grahame's comment, one that fits your head.

Best bet is to just go to a couple of shops and try as many different makes as possible and see which is more comfy. I had a Specialized and then discovered too late my head isn't Specialized shaped. It appears to be Giro and Rudy Project shaped of the ones I've tried.

The Giro has big vents and in theory should be good for keeping your head cool but the padding is quite luxurious so it actually can be a bit sweaty, if the helmet's light then I think the padding can be quite thin. The Rudy Project I have is a cheap (£40) one size fits all job and has always been comfy and not too hot either.

Sizing is another point, the Giro (medium) is a snugger fit so I can only wear a bandana under it whereas the Rudy I can fit a cap or a thermal skull cap comfortably under it. Makes a difference in winter.

I have found a better deal online before but GBs have also come out as good as them when the 10% discount comes in to play and you aren't paying postage.

As a finish to my long and winding ramble I read that big/lot of vents don't always equal the coolest helmet as it's more to do with the shape of the vents and how they direct the air flow through your flowing locks.

Thanks for the comments (I'm ignoring Mr Hemming's dubious and disgusting 'contribution' to the conversation) and in  's case, essay -I was just testing the water to see what else might be out there alongside my current helmet, a Giro.

If those vents on the S-works work, then that sounds like one to look at. Now the next question where's the best place to look at the widest range. I may drop into Corridori on Saturday and chat up my old mate Smiffy (previously of Bike + and Pearsons - and a handy person to know as he always gives me discount 8) )

PS - the Squalo reminds me of a bad attack of acne... I think I'd prefer something sleeker

yes the new S works ladies helmet is mainly white with a few little (very little lines of token pink) but i'm afraid they are 100 pounds nearly. but some places are doing free sun glasses with them.

i dont have the S works one but it really nice i wore hannas a few times when we were away, i think robyn has one and i know clare has.

GB's sold me the met 'inferno' for £65 the other day which is a pretty competitive price comparing to other bike shops
Also bought the Giro monza for £45 which is not to bad either, although they didn't have either in just white when i was in there last week
Maybe worth going there and trying lots on to find out which one fits the best for you rather than ordering from the internet

Specialized helmets also pass the more stringent SNELL tests, which most other helmets don't :!:

Crikey, thats about £85, how did you do that?

Tried one for size then emailed a friend who lives in New Jersey who knows a friend who knows a friend who has some dealings with Giro US and managed to get a good price. $25 for post and packaging, but thought that was a small price to pay for a limited addition helmet. :D
Although it hasnt arrived yet :(
